Even though it’s technically the Caribbean’s winter, winter temps are mild, ranging from high 70s to low 80s during the day. It is also less humid, with less rain than in other seasons. Babies will be more comfortable during this time.

That being said, it’s best to wait until your baby is at least a few months old before putting them on a plane to the Caribbean. Air travel comes with the risk of being exposed to germs, especially during cold/flu season in the US. Your baby’s immune system will be stronger if you wait.

For families traveling with a baby, Grand Velas Riviera Maya offers a baby concierge to help with childcare. We loved that the kids’ club here has much later hours, being available from 9 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. Kids can participate in daily activities, watch movies, use video game consoles, or make arts and crafts. Dinner is also served at 5:45 p.m. each day. It made it easy for us to sneak off for a romantic dinner one night of our vacation without worrying about our boys. There’s also a teens’ club for ages 13+, so older kids at this family-friendly resort have plenty to do!

Getting to the Caribbean from Los Angeles
Families flying to the Caribbean from LAX will want to book the closest airport to their destination:
- Sangster International Airport is the biggest near Beaches Negril, though it’s a 75-minute drive to Negril. Negril Aerodrome Airport is also a possibility, but it’s a much smaller airport.
- V.C. Bird International Airport is closest to Carlisle Bay, being a few miles from the resort.
- Punta Cana International Airport is less than two miles away from Club Med Punta Cana.
- The George F.L. Charles Airport is closest to Windjammer Landing in St. Lucia, though the closest international airport is 37 miles away at Hewanorra International Airport.
- Sangster International Airport is also the best choice for families traveling to Montego Bay from Los Angeles to Hilton Rose Hall.
- Cancun International Airport is closest to Grand Velas Riviera Maya, being just 35 minutes from the resort by car.
Except for Cancun – which has direct five-hour flights – most flights to the Caribbean from Los Angeles have at least one layover and take 7+ hours. JetBlue, American, and United all offer flights.
