They say every city has a soul. Detroit’s is powered by engines, music, and a whole lotta grit. It’s the quirky kind of place where history, tech, and sports overlap – one minute, we’re learning about Ford’s Model T; the next, we’re eating food truck tacos by the Detroit River, and then we’re donning red to cheer on the Red Wings. As a mom who’s seen her fair share of family vacations go sideways (thanks, toddler meltdowns and hangry teens), I know for sure that Detroit is packed with things that kids will actually enjoy. Plus, there’s enough history, music, art, and sports to keep the grown-ups happy, too! Let’s drive into the Motor City’s coolest stops. But buckle up, friend; Detroit is ready to wow.

Detroit’s History and Culture

Detroit is a city with a multi-faceted story. To understand it, let’s start at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Here, we will see Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s murals celebrating the relationship between humans and machines, mixed into Detroit’s rich automobile industry. The murals alone span thousands of square feet and are a must-see for visitors who want to understand Detroit’s story. Architecture buffs and art enthusiasts will also love them.

Nearby, the Detroit Historical Museum takes guests back in time, highlighting the Underground Railroad and the rise of Motown Records. Yes, there’s a whole section about the city’s Motown music legends, like Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson.

For an even deeper dive into history, visit my family’s favorite spot just outside the city- Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford Museum. It’s like walking into the early 1900s, complete with guided tours of historic homes and genuine Model T rides. Kids will love the vintage steam train, and grown-ups can geek out over the interactive exhibits that showcase Ford Motor Company’s contributions to the automobile industry. General admission also grants access to the museum’s rare artifacts, making it one of the best places in the city to explore.

Family Fun in Metro Detroit

For a super kid-friendly day, head to the Detroit Zoo. It’s open year-round, and it’s home to different species of animals from around the planet. It also happens to host one of the largest penguin exhibits in the world with a 360° underwater tunnel. Trust me, kids LOVE this!

The Michigan Science Center is another awesome spot. The interactive exhibits make learning fun. My boys love donning lab coats and tinkering in the STEM Playground.

If you’re short on time, the Belle Isle Nature Center is a quick outing with beautiful views of the Detroit River… and Canada! The first time I took my boys, they couldn’t believe that they could wave hello to someone in a completely different country.

Finally, if you’re in town during the holiday season, don’t miss Campus Martius Park, which transforms into a winter wonderland with a huge outdoor ice rink. This city is full of figure skaters and hockey players, so watching the skaters can be serious entertainment. Just warm up by grabbing a hot chocolate from the food trucks lined along the Grand River. The Royal Oaks Winterfest (in nearby Royal Oak, Michigan) is another fun weekend activity from the end of November to the end of December.

Sports Fans Delight in Detroit

Sports fans will adore Detroit. Catch a Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park, a stadium that feels like Walt Disney made a ballpark. Attractions like a tiger-themed carousel, a Ferris wheel, family-friendly food options, plus extras like fireworks on select nights, make it an unforgettable outing for kids and adults in downtown Detroit.

Meanwhile, hockey and basketball fans can check out Little Caesars Arena, which also hosts live music events all year-round. Kids love watching interactive displays on the massive jumbotron and dancing to the music during breaks. Between periods or quarters, the family can enjoy games, giveaways, and fun mascot antics. The concourses feature plenty of spots to grab pizza, pretzels, or ice cream. And the state-of-the-art design of the arena ensures a comfortable and engaging experience for everyone. (There isn’t a bad seat.)

Finally, a Detroit Lions game at Ford Field is packed with fun for the whole family. The high-energy atmosphere, with roaring fans and a booming stadium soundtrack, sets the stage for good old-fashioned fun. Kids love the interactive fan zones featuring games, face painting, and photo ops with the beloved team mascot, Roary.
