Being stuck at home doesn’t mean you can’t leave your house. As long as you can find a way to socially distance, you can appreciate the gifts G‑d, mother nature or the universe has freely just plopped right into your backyard. Our backyard is the Santa Monica Mountains so we chose a short hike in Malibu, part of the Backbone Trail, Piuma Ridge.
There’s free limited parking available right off Las Virgenes Rd. as it crests into Pacific Coast Highway and turns into Malibu Canyon Rd. There are several trails to sort through.

This is all too familiar! Until recently it wasn’t a problem, but lately every time I ask my daughter if she wants to go for a hike or go see a waterfall I hear “No” or “I don’t like waterfalls.” I do often take her anyways in hopes that she will warm up to it and sometimes she does, other times there is lots of whining and protesting. Its tough to fond the balance, but my hope is the more we go the more she will want to. After all, there is little else to do during this time. I can totally relate to you!
Yes, exactly. It’s not like we have so many great options but nature is always great. Why can’t they see that, lol!
I am happy that my kids are energetic hikers. Or I should say “were” now. My teen daughter is no longer into family hikes, and she hates that there’s no cellphone service while hiking, and she moans and groans, and rolls her eyes at everything these days. So our hikes have reduced in number, or we just go with our son.
Yes, notice there was only one young hiker in our group? The tween chose to stay home.…lol
It is great that you have places to get outside that are close to home. I remember those years when our kids had to be dragged to everything. And then had a great time when they got there. Our kids are much older now and they love to head outside with us.
OK, thanks for giving me hope!
Haha I can one hundred per cent relate to this — kids not cooperating! However I think I was even worse when I was a child, refusing to go up the Eiffel Tower despite my mothers desperate tries to spark an interest … I was simply more interested in playing in the sandbox at the playground. I really regret that now years later.
Yes, it’s hard to get them to see what they’d miss if they didn’t just move forward. All we can do is try.…
Such a great post, and I had a chuckle at the comment. Every parent can relate! Great tips! And you are right, take them anyway!
It’s tough for the kids who are free-spirited and often find it difficult to stay put for longer duration. Yeah, it becomes difficult when kids do not want to participate in the activities at times. Those are some nice tricks to keep him engaged and take interest.
Haha! Thanks!
Oooh, this is so much me when I was a child. I never wanted to hike. My motivation (from my parents) always was ice cream after the hike … or a pool to jump in. 🙂
And nowadays I love hiking, it’s one of my most favorite activities to do in nature.

Haha! OK, I’ll try that next time. Glad you’re into it now. Hopefully mine will too.

As log as kids are involved and they have a motivation, its tough to engage them in such adventure activities. But I think you guys did a great job in keeping the momentum going. Its very important that kids are engaged with nature and its beauty. I think keeping them curios and pushing them also helps.
