When I told my three boys, ages 15, 13, and 11, that we were heading to Mansfield, Ohio for the weekend, they gave me the usual skeptical look reserved for any destination that doesn’t include a beach or roller coaster. But by the time we drove away, they were already asking when we could come back. Why Mansfield, Ohio with Family Should Be Your Next Getaway is a must-visit destination filled with interactive exhibits, outdoor adventures, and a good mix of local history and modern charm.

Touring the Famous Ohio State Reformatory
No surprise here… the highlight of our trip was the legendary Ohio State Reformatory. Known to many from the major motion picture The Shawshank Redemption. This former prison is not only a top attraction in Richland County, but it’s also a key stop on the Shawshank Trail, a self-guided tour that fans of the movie and history buffs alike will love.
We took a private tour of the reformatory that led us through towering cell blocks, claustrophobic solitary confinement cells, and the famously eerie warden’s office.
My boys were completely captivated by the paranormal activity stories (they’re still debating whether we caught a ghost on video).
They recognized filming spots from the movie, especially scenes tied to the main characters, and were fascinated by the stories behind the production of one of the most revered major motion pictures ever made in Ohio (or the US).
The interactive exhibits inside the prison gave a compelling look into the lives of actual inmates, the structure of prison life, and how the building and prison life transformed over the years. Nothing like bonding with your kids over ghost sightings, prison reform, and movie trivia!

My son, fully committed to his role as Andy Dufresne, reenacted that iconic moment from The Shawshank Redemption.
Buckeye Imagination Museum for Teens and Children
We stopped at the Buckeye Imagination Museum, and let me tell you, my kids did not want to leave. I had to bribe them with the promise of donuts just to make it to the car.
This interactive children’s museum is one of the best things to do in Richland County with kids, especially if you’re traveling with a mix of ages.
The lower level of the Buckeye Imagination Museum is ideal for young children, with themed play areas and educational programs that encourage imaginative role-play. But the real win for our crew was the entire upper floor, designed specifically for older kids and teens. They ran from the rotating rock wall to the laser race challenge and spent a ridiculous amount of time playing air hockey at the 6-person table. It’s rare to find a museum that keeps a 15-year-old as engaged as an 11-year-old, but this one nailed it. It’s a great spot for indoor fun that doesn’t feel like a compromise, even for big kids (and their moms).

The boys were in their element at the Buckeye Imagination Museum.
Nature, Trails, and Bird Encounters
A trip to Mansfield, Ohio, with family wouldn’t be complete without time outside. The Ohio Bird Sanctuary is a peaceful spot with natural beauty, interactive exhibits, and a songbird aviary. The highlight? Birds will literally land on your hand to feed. I’m not saying I cried, but it was definitely one of those core memory moments.
We also enjoyed hiking the miles of public trails at Gorman Nature Center and spotting wildlife in Pleasant Valley near Malabar Farm State Park, a working farm and former estate on the National Register of Historic Places. The Louis Bromfield Visitor Education Center offers a solid educational experience, and we even saw a maple syrup cabin. Pancake breakfast dreams!

High-Octane Fun at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
We took a detour that turned into one of the biggest highlights of the trip—driving lessons at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. If you’re picturing Sunday drivers, think again. This was the real deal. The course is known nationwide and hosts pro-level races, but they also offer driving experiences for teens and families. While we were there, the Ohio State Police were practicing defensive maneuvers, which only added to the “this is so cool” factor. My 15-year-old was practically vibrating with excitement and has already asked to return this summer for the teen defensive driving school.

Squad goals: field trip edition. Teachers, teens, and one very fast ride at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Vroom vroom!
Charming Downtown and Cultural Highlights
Downtown Mansfield is full of small-town charm. The Carrousel District is a local favorite, and riding the Richland Carrousel Park’s indoor carousel was a treat for all ages (even the teenagers who weren’t going to ride, but totally did).
The nearby Renaissance Theatre, home to the Renaissance Performing Arts Association, regularly hosts live music and a variety of shows. We didn’t catch a comedy show this time, but we peeked inside and checked out the beautifully restored historic buildings. Really cool aside- Count Basie once performed here!
Don’t miss the Mansfield Art Center and Mansfield Memorial Museum (the oldest museum in the region). They are filled with local history and national artists.

My 11-year-old giving major side-eye to a very serious garden statue at Kingwood Center Gardens. Clearly not impressed with the art scene.
Where to Eat in Mansfield, Ohio with Family
Start the day with breakfast at The Blueberry Patch. The blueberry donuts are worth the drive alone. I mean, I would drive two hours just for those. For dinner, we recommend Hudson and Essex. Its sister space, The Caverns, is a unique venue that’s part wine cellar, part event space, and fully awesome.

The guest rooms are thoughtfully designed and full of charm, with just enough cozy touches to make even this tired mom feel spoiled. Bonus points for the washers and dryers in every hall that sync to your phone, so I always knew exactly when the cycle finished and when to pause the movie for a quick switch.
