Lake Michigan is not just any old lake; it’s one of the Great Lakes, stretching over 1,600 miles of shoreline. From sunbathing, building sandcastles, or pretending to be the main character in one of Emily Henry’s rom-coms, Lake Michigan’s beaches have it all, just fresh-water-style (that’s without sharks or jellyfish). I’ve traipsed all over the shores, from sand dunes to urban oases, and I have to say that the following Lake Michigan beaches promise to be the perfect place for a family vacation. Without further ado, let’s dive into the best beaches on Lake Michigan, where we can soak up the sun without worrying about a shark or a jellyfish (or a swordfish or a whale).

Northwestern Michigan’s Coastal Treasures
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Sleeping Bear Dunes has a name that sounds like a good story.
That’s because there is one.
A Native American legend tells the story of a mother bear and her cubs who swam in the strong waters of Lake Michigan, all of whom fell asleep in particular places that resembled their shapes. (This is the super-abbreviated family-friendly version of the actual story.)
Anyway, the massive Mama Bear sand dunes rise up to 450 feet above the lake! Visitors love to climb them (or at least try to —it’s a real feat to climb sand). From the summit, one can enjoy spectacular sunsets and panoramic views that will immediately have them pulling out Zillow and looking for a summer cottage. (Don’t forget water shoes—the sand here can get uncomfortably hot!)
Kids can splash around in the shallow waters of Lake Michigan, while adults can bask in the glow of a Michigan sunset. There are plenty of picnic areas and picnic tables, making it easy to enjoy an affordable meal (save that money for a down payment on a lake cottage here) in the middle of nature.

Stay right in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore at the Dune Climb Inn. With nature trails where families can bike or hike straight to the beach and have nightly campfires and barbecues, the clean rooms will be a great headquarters for a family Lake Michigan beach vacay.
Glen Arbor Beach
Glen Arbor Beach is perfect for a relaxing day with a good book. The kiddos will love making sand castles and playing in the surf. The waters here are gentle, which makes it an ideal spot for families with young kids. Nearby, the town of Glen Arbor is full of fun places that the whole family will enjoy—coffee shops and kitschy tourist stops where kids can hunt for unique souvenirs. Don’t miss out on trying the local ice cream—if the beach doesn’t cool you off, a Pine Cone definitely will (not the tree kind, but the ice cream kind).

Stay at LeBear Residential Resort for a lakeside home away from home that will fit the whole family. Enjoy a private deck overlooking the lake and take a dip inside the indoor pool if the sun gets too warm.

Ludington State Park
Ludington State Park gives visitors that good old classic beach experience. The park’s beautiful beachfront along Lake Michigan’s sand dunes mingle with dense forest trails. Whether kayaking, fishing, or taking the dog on a long walk, Ludington has it all. Hike the trails and enjoy the sights of the surrounding dunes and woodlands.
Visitors to the park love spending the day in this natural haven but also enjoy sneaking out into Ludington’s hopping downtown area. Known for it’s laid-back vibe, don’t worry about getting too dressed up for a night on the town here. The family will find fun shopping, grabbing an ice cream, or playing a round of putt putt golf. Everything is walkable here!

Holland State Park
Holland State Park is renowned for its iconic Big Red lighthouse, which stands watch on Lake Michigan’s azure blue shores. This park consists of soft sandy beaches, ideal for both families and sun-seekers. While they might be missing sea shells, visitors have been known to find the most beautiful sea-green beach glass here, so keep those eyes peeled! The park’s designated recreational areas with lifeguards are perfect for swimming, beach volleyball games, or water sports.

Saugatuck Dunes State Park is the perfect destination for families with older children who appreciate a quieter experience. This park’s nature trails lead to secluded beaches that will make the family feel like the Robinsons of Switzerland. The dunes offer otherworldly landscapes for exploring with human or four-legged friends. The sandy beaches and wooded terrain make this spot ideal for nature lovers of all ages.

Families with teens will love to stay at the Belvedere Inn, where guests ages 13 and up can enjoy a resort-style atmosphere with a spa, arcade room, gardens, free breakfast, and a bar.
South Haven
While in the summer, this beach town is bustling, in the spring, fall, and winter, Little Sable Point in South Haven is a tranquil beach spot hidden away from the otherwise touristy spots. This quiet beach is perfect for those seeking solitude and a peaceful retreat. Surprisingly, the iconic red South Haven Lighthouse is also generally light on visitors. Do be sure to check the local beach forecast for updates on water conditions and beach closures, as the lake’s currents can be incredibly powerful.

Oak Street Beach is where urban sophistication meets sandy shores in the Midwest. This beach is located near downtown Chicago and gives visitors stunning cityscape views and beachside amenities. It’s a great spot for a quick beach break when exploring the city of Chicago. The beach features recreational activities like beach volleyball and jogging paths. And, of course, in a city like Chicago, a very short walk leads to excellent dining options.
North Avenue Beach
North Avenue Beach is known for its lively atmosphere. The beach has volleyball courts, bike rentals, and seasonal food stands. It’s not just a beach; it’s a social event with Ken-worthy beach backdrops. Do be aware that the parking lot can get crowded, especially during warm weather or major events, so plan accordingly.

Indiana Dunes National Park
From sandy shores to lush forests, Indiana Dunes National Park has something for every nature enthusiast. The beach areas are well-maintained because they are part of the National Park system. There is ample space for sunbathing and swimming, but, unfortunately, because it is so close to factories, the beach is missing that perfectly peaceful skyline. Surprisingly, the real draw of this park is the inland hiking trails and kayaking which feature the areas incredible biodiversity. The park offers many guided hikes, and there are plenty of outfitters renting out kayaks. If visiting the beach, do check the beach forecast and water conditions for any potential beach hazard statements before heading out on the water, as the lake’s currents can be deadly.

Just 70 miles from Chicago, New Buffalo Beach gives off a laid-back charm perfect for a relaxed day by the lake. The clean, sandy beach is heaven-sent for swimming and casual water activities, like floating on a tube with a drink in hand. After a day in the sun, explore the town’s local shops, wineries, and fun dining spots for a taste of local Michigan flavor.

Stay at the Harbor Grand Hotel for a luxurious visit. Guests enjoy the water views, fireplaces, and spa tubs. This is the perfect spot for a fall retreat.

Manitowoc’s Two Rivers Beaches
Two Rivers Beaches in Manitowoc consists of 13 beaches along Lake Michigan. Two public beaches—Neshotah Beach and Red Arrow Beach—welcome humans and their furry friends. Together, these beaches make up 80 acres of lakeside fun! Visitors can utilize amenities such as bike trails, basketball courts, volleyball courts, bathhouses, concession stands, restrooms, tables, grills, horseshoe pits, and, of course, swimming.
Where to Stay in Manitowoc’s Two Rivers
Families with older children will love a stay at the Red Forest Bed and Breakfast for a vacation in a fairy-tale setting. Guests like me love the charming feminine decor. The free breakfast is nice too.
Families who are looking for a dash of adventure, a splash of relaxation, or a generous mix of both, can find them in these best beaches on Lake Michigan. Grab the sunscreen, beach towel (or blanket for the fall and winter), and perhaps a basket to store a few Petoskey stones, and then set off to explore these remarkable coastal destinations in the heart of the Midwest.
