Located in the good ol’ heart of Texas, San Antonio is the second-most populous city in the state. Its 34 million annual visitors come to see recreations of historic battles, eat epic grub, and ride off-the-rails rollercoasters. Here is our Texas-sized list of fun things to do for the whole family in San Antonio.
Amusement Parks and Water Adventures Bring Thrills and Chills
Six Flags Fiesta Texas
In Texas, it can be hotter’n a jalapeño, and for our family, there’s no better way to beat the heat than finding fun in the sun at the state’s top amusement and water parks. In San Antonio, we found the mother lode!

With roller coasters that defy gravity—and probably some common sense—Six Flags Fiesta Texas is where adrenaline junkies can scream louder than a cattle drive at high noon; now that’s LOUD! If adrenaline is your thing, then the SUPERMAN™ Krypton Coaster, Goliath, and The Joker Carnival of Chaos will definitely be your jam. Of course, there are calmer, gentler, less thrilling family rides, but when in Texas… Does it even need to be said?

SeaWorld San Antonio
Over at the 416-acre, marine-themed SeaWorld San Antonio, a mix of splash zones and wondrous sea creatures will leave you refreshingly soaked and smiling. Be sure to take a stomach-dropping ride on the gravity-defying Texas Stingray. This wooden coaster is the longest, tallest, and fastest wood coaster in all of Texas. Cue more screaming noises here!
For those teens who are animal advocates—like mine—according to SeaWorld, “the SeaWorld rescue program has rescued, rehabilitated, released or given a second life to over 41,000 animals and counting. Species rescued in Texas are typically dolphins, sea turtles, birds, and the occasional manatee.”

Morgan’s Wonderland
But the real MVP? Morgan’s Wonderland is a one-of-a-kind park where everyone—no matter their abilities—gets in on the fun. This isn’t just any amusement park; it’s a groundbreaking experience designed with inclusion in mind. And, whether you are blessed with neurodivergent or special needs children in your life, we love that everyone is welcome!
Our family loved checking out all the wheelchair-accessible rides and sensory-friendly spaces, and we felt so much joy that every inch of this place was built to make sure everybody could play, laugh, and explore. It’s proof that big hearts and big ideas can create big fun. Talk about a rootin’-tootin’ good time where everyone leaves with a smile as wide as Texas!

River Bluff Water Experience

Did we mention that it gets hot in Texas? For our family, it doesn’t matter what the high temps get up to; water adventures are our thing. One of the coolest resorts in town—the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa (more on this later)—is also home to a nine-acre water park called the River Bluff Water Experience. This is heaven for kids and parents. We’re talking thrilling water slides, a lazy river perfect for floating all your worries away, and an adults-only pool with Hill Country views that’ll make you forget about your inbox. Add private cabanas, temperature-controlled pools, and whirlpool spas, and you’ve got a little slice of paradise. It’s like vacation on turbo mode—with a Texas twist, of course!

This awesome water park was one of our favorite things to do in San Antonio because it provided heart-pounding thrills and a solid way to cool off, so if that’s what you want, you’re covered here—literally, in sunscreen and water splashes.

Museums Teens Will Love
The Alamo
Alright, y’all, you can’t visit San Antonio without checking out The Alamo—and no, we’re not talking about just the building; we mean the entire historic site! We could have spent all day strolling around the beautiful grounds of the Alamo—it’s free, and you get a real feel for the Texas-sized history here.
We also recommend taking your journey to the next level by grabbing a ticket for the Ralston Family Collections Center. This place is packed with jaw-dropping artifacts from the Battle of the Alamo—some of which have never been seen before! Oh, and did we mention some pieces were donated by none other than Phil Collins (yes, that Phil Collins). Although he’s British, the singer of the legendary band ‘Genesis’ developed a love and fascination with American History—and specifically The Alamo—since his childhood. He became one of the most significant private collectors of Alamo artifacts and memorabilia and decided to donate his entire collection to the state of Texas, Yee-Haw!!

Remember the Alamo? ©Canva
The Ralston Family Collections Center opened within steps from The Alamo in early 2023, bringing a fresh perspective to this historic site. You’ll get to explore hundreds of items from the 1836 battle, plus a new exhibit for 2024—the Mission Gate and Lunette, a reconstructed entryway and defensive structure that provides a deeper glimpse into Alamo history.
With a San Antonio CityPass, you’ll also experience the Alamo’s augmented reality in the Long Barracks (it’s like stepping back in time with an iPad). Swing by the red booth at the entrance for your ticket, and you’ll be set for an unforgettable dive into Texas history.
Hopscotch
After you’ve soaked in all that Texas history at The Alamo, you might be ready for a thirst-quencher, snacks, and a place to cool off. Grab your posse and take things up a notch with a fun-filled afternoon at the interactive art space Hopscotch—it’s mind-blowing, Insta-worthy, and most importantly, teen-approved!
We already know that Texas does things bigger and better, so this is not quite your typical museum—parents and kids kick things off with sparkling cocktails and mocktails. Kids (or the young at heart) can sip on the Celestial Unicorn, a whimsical mix of lemon, lavender, butterfly pea syrup, and electric dust inspired by the space’s playful, collaborative, and oh-so-quirky spirit. And the snacks? Picture pizza ranch popcorn or spicy mango ice cream—deliciously unexpected treats that spark curiosity and keep the fun flowing.

Hopscotch is one of San Antonio’s most unique, family-friendly experiences. Think touchable installations, trippy visuals, and creative surprises around every corner. It’s the perfect spot to let loose, explore, and snap some seriously cool photos. Featuring 15 immersive art exhibits by local, national, and international artists, Hopscotch blends light, sound, and creativity, and the result is something my family loved. From the glowing ball pit to the laser graffiti room, it could possibly be my teenage daughter’s favorite museum.

Panoramic Views From the Tower of the Americas
Maybe not exactly a museum, but for those who love a bird’s-eye view of the city, we suggest making your way over to the Tower of the Americas, built in 1968 for the Hemisfair World’s Fair and celebrating San Antonio’s 250th anniversary. This iconic landmark stands 750 feet tall with 360-degree city views. Our family loved taking the elevator ride up to the Observation Deck, perfect for snapping photos and seeing the incredible, expansive views. Families will love the Skies Over Texas 4D movie experience—a wild ride—and we wanted to do it again! Those looking to eat can dine at the revolving Chart House Restaurant—another unforgettable way to experience the city’s beauty.

San Antonio Has Perfect Days For Outdoor Family Fun
Kayaking the San Antonio River
Like most moms, we’re always looking for a way to get the family outside for physical activities without anyone catching on. Kayaking the San Antonio River with the Texas River Company is a really cool way to spend the day, and you can be sure your teens’ moody “I’m bored” moments will vanish. The 1.2-mile paddle from Roosevelt Park to the Blue Star District is so laid back—perfect for families looking to relax, unwind, and enjoy quality time together without the rush.
Cruise down the calm waters, surrounded by beautiful trees and wildlife; we loved spotting ducks, turtles, and all sorts of bird species! The best part of kayaking is how chill it is, with no cares in the world. Don’t feel like you have to rush; just listen to Spotify and try not to paddle into the surrounding trees—like my daughter did. Many families have been known to kayak out, toss the football, and even do a little fishing along the way. However you decide to experience this kayaking adventure, it will be the perfect break from the usual hustle and bustle of city exploring.

Pedal Assist BCycles Are Made for the San Antonio River Walk
If two wheels are more your family’s speed, hop on BCycles and explore the banks of the San Antonio River Walk, especially the charming Mission Reach area. Trust me when I say pedal-assist bikes will be a hit with everyone—they’re super easy to ride and so much fun for the whole family. Our hour-long ride began at Confluence Park, where the views are awesome, and then continued around the path next to the river banks for at least five miles. Riding long distances and up hills with this kind of bicycle was easy. There’s no better way to explore historic San Antonio than on a pedal-assist BCycle—it allows you to pedal twice the distance in half the time.

Your family may choose to keep biking the 10.1-mile loop trail—which takes about three hours—or if you’ve got perpetually hungry teens, there’s a great place to eat along the trail route. A tasty and unique way to wrap up any outdoor adventure is a classic burger with a Mexican twist, and our family loved Burgerteca. With indigenous ingredients, regional flavors, colorful decor, inventive drinks, and desserts, this place sets trends for cool places to eat. My daughter loved the Takis Cheezy Beef Mac, layered with creamy queso, beef, and a crispy kick of Takis; it’s bold and cheesy, and you won’t find this anywhere else! If you want family-friendly fun and good food, a day like this will vibe with everything your teens are into and more.

Cruising The Riverwalk
Besides seeing San Antonio through the eyes of your tweens and teens, we thought of other unique perspectives that the entire family would love, and they’re actually some of the best things to do in the ‘River City.’ The San Antonio River Walk is one of the city’s most famous attractions and a key part of its identity—my dad remembered his visit to the San Antonio River Walk from 65 years ago. Of course, exploring it on foot is nice, but we thought the best way to see this popular destination was by boat.
For a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, hop aboard one of the colorful boats of GO RIO Cruises for a 35-minute guided tour through the heart of the San Antonio River Walk. As you glide along the water, you’ll get an up-close view of the beautiful surroundings, from the lush landscaping to the historic architecture. There are so many unique shops and live music everywhere. The tour also covers fascinating tidbits about the city’s past, which we found to be a great mix of fun and learning. I highly recommend going on one of the night cruises; it’s a cool way to be in the middle of the action. And it might even be something the kids will talk about when they get home. Imagine that!

Where To Eat With Teens In San Antonio
Jerk Shack
Whether your teens are constant grazers or bottomless pits, San Antonio has so many hidden gems that it’s a can’t-miss situation, even for your hardest-to-please eaters. One of our top picks is The Jerk Shack, led by Chef Nicola Blaque. Located near SeaWorld, this counter-service cafe serves up some of the most amazing Caribbean-inspired dishes we’ve ever had. Every bite was a fiery and aromatic burst of flavor—this place is the bomb! We loved the Fried Green Tomatoes, Plantains, and Mix Chicken Plate, allowing us to taste all the different flavors.

Box Street All Day
If you’re hungry for innovative and delicious food, run—don’t walk—to grab a bite at Box Street All Day, a trendy spot near Tower of the Americas in Hemisfair Park. And YES, you can go there all day! They offer a mix of fresh, local ingredients and inventive dishes. We ate the breakfast chilaquiles and house-made donuts, but be sure to try their smash burgers and carnitas tacos. The menu has something for everyone, and it’s the perfect place to fuel up before or after a day of exploring. The vibe here is laid-back, and my teen thought it was a lit spot for families to hang out. It was also noted that the decor was drip—stylish, trendy, and cool. For us parents, anyone looking to enjoy a tasty, casual meal will love it!

Roca & Martillo
Looking for table service with a twist? A combo of Tuscan flavors with the bold tastes of South Texas, then Roca & Martillo at The Rock at La Cantera is where you want to be. If I could have their Deviled Eggs every day, I’d be on cloud nine in cowgirl boots. And the grilled ahi tuna was melt-in-your-mouth, like butter on a hot biscuit. Their pasta was comforting, like a Sunday afternoon.

But that’s not all… Our fun dinner coincided with a movie night in the energetic, family-friendly La Cantera area. It’s a thriving park-like spot with a mix of shops and restaurants, and they showed the latest animated movie on an enormous Texas-sized movie screen while we ate and drank—what a perfect night out!

Best Tips for Crushing Your San Antonio Adventure
With tweens and teens, you hope everyone goes along to get along, especially on a family vacay, so in an effort to keep things chill, try to plan for breaks throughout the day to fuel up and dodge the heat. Mix action-packed outings with laid-back hang time—splash pad or gift shop—to avoid family burnout (trust me, it works). Ultimately, San Antonio isn’t just a vacation spot; it’s a full-on playground for teens and parents alike, packed with epic experiences and a little Texas swagger to keep things interesting! It was everything our family hoped it would be, and we can’t wait to return.
There are so many things to do in San Antonio. The kids may even decide to explore on their own. Hallelujah!
When You Go
Where to Stay in San Antonio
San Antonio has so many family-friendly hotels, but we recommend two that will definitely appeal to your teens’ needs and mental well-being—meaning there’s got to be some fun stuff to do there. There are really two categories, and you might want to experience both on two separate trips—or both on a week-long trip if you have the time. Some families crave resort-style relaxation, and some prefer being at the heart of all the action. And if you happen to be a Marriott Bonvoy member, either one of these hotels will be the perfect home base for your family getaway.

While your teens are riding the slides, parents will love unwinding at the Lantana Spa or hitting the 36-hole TPC golf course. The dining options on-site range from casual bites to fine dining, making it easy to satisfy every craving. We spent two nights here; three would have been perfect for relaxing and playing in the water park. It’s also conveniently located near the amusement parks. Plus, in December, experience the magic of ICE! where larger-than-life ice sculptures and thrilling holiday activities like an ice slide and tunnel create a winter wonderland in the heart of Texas.
