When to Visit Colorado Ski Towns

For families planning on hitting the slopes, skiing conditions are dictated by the season. Peak season for Colorado ski towns is anywhere from December to March – but prices (and crowds) reflect that. January to March is coldest and February to March is considered the best season for skiing. For families wanting to enjoy holiday fun, the best time to visit is December!

With the mountains being so high above sea level, they do stay colder beyond peak season. Some slopes open as early as mid-October and don’t close until April or later for families that want to avoid the crowds, but not all ski areas are open, so check mountain resort websites before visiting!

Here are the nine best ski towns in Colorado we think the whole family will love.

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek is perfect for families, located just 12 miles from the busier slopes at Vail Village. For skiing families, Beaver Creek has more than 2,000 skiable acres. There are slopes for all skill levels, making it perfect for families with young kids, older teens, and everyone in between!

After the slopes, explore the 40 onsite bars, shops, and restaurants. Or, take the 12-mile drive to Vail Village, a European-style town with an incredible apres-ski scene. I was fortunate enough to break away from the kids for a while and walk through Vail with my fiance at night – it was so romantic strolling through the village, surrounded by powdery snow and twinkling lights.

Where to Stay in Beaver Creek

Stay in suites or condos minutes from the ski lifts at Beaver Creek Lodge. They also have a kid’s club, pool, fire pits, and Jacuzzis in some rooms. And, for families that don’t want to travel with gear, there are ski and snowboard rentals.

Winter Park

Winter Park is close enough to Denver that it’s convenient without the hype of some bigger resorts, boasting a “locals vibe” that some families will appreciate. There are 3,000 acres to ski at Winter Park Resort, so it won’t be too crowded. Winter Park is also near Granby Ranch, a skiing area perfect for beginners. My kiddos took their first ski lessons here!

Stop by Mary Jane Mountain for apres ski fun including live music, drinks, and food specials. There is also plenty to do in Winter Park at night, including glow night tubing, glow night ice skating, and a sunset Snowcat and s’more tour.

When You Go

Traveling to Colorado Ski Towns from Los Angeles

Families driving to Colorado from Los Angeles are looking at a 12-13-hour road trip. This can be a fun experience but families not craving that extra component can fly to the airport closest to your destination.

For example, fly into Denver International Airport for ski areas in Summit County, Aspen-Pitken County Airport for Aspen Snowmass ski areas, Purgatory-Durango La Plata County Airport for ski areas in the San Juan Mountains, Yampa Valley Regional Airport for Steamboat Springs, or Eagle Co. Regional Airport for Beaver Creek and Vail Village.

Some of these airports offer nonstop flights, taking about 2-3 hours. However, connecting flights are common for some of the more localized airports. Find flights through United, Delta, American Airlines, and Frontier.

WayAway is a flight search engine that looks for the best deals for destinations you’re visiting with the possibility of earning cash back on your purchases. Have you tried them yet? If not, give them a spin and see how much money you’ll save on flights.

To get discounts on tours in the area, we recommend Get Your Guide or Viator (which offers 51% off last-minute tours!).

To save time (and because we travel so much), we got an annual travel insurance policy for the whole family from this site. They have affordable policies for individual trips, too, and tools to make picking one easy.
