Hocking Hills romantic getaways are equal parts rejuvenating and unforgettable, the perfect backdrop for your next love story.
Nestled among rugged cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and whispering forests, Hocking Hills is a romantic destination that offers the perfect blend of nature and connection. My fiance and I explored Hocking Hills on our anniversary trip.
We spent our days eating at yummy diners and hiking the beautiful landscape. By nightfall, as cool temps set in, we gazed at the stars before retreating to the warmth of the hot tub, sharing adult beverages while steam billowed around us, leaving us in our own little world.
Here are ideas to consider as you start planning your own Hocking Hills romantic getaway vacation.

Exploring Hocking Hills State Park
The Hocking Hills area is over 2,300 acres sprinkled with beautiful waterfalls, recessed caves, and stone structures. Navigating the area isn’t easy – there are clearly marked trails and maps, but we couldn’t access cell phone service anywhere without Wifi.
We visited when water levels were low, but Cedar Falls was still impressive!

Cantwell Cliffs
Cantwell Cliffs has two trails. While not very long, the trails are intense, with narrow passageways, deep valleys, and steep stone steps. Enjoy seeing rock formations, tinted reddish brown from the iron oxide inclusions, lush forest canopies, and dramatic cliffs.
Conkle’s Hollow
We visited Conkle’s Hollow from the Lower Gorge Trail. We were pretty tired while visiting, and this path is wheelchair friendly, so it didn’t have the same elevation changes we’d already experienced throughout the day. I loved exploring the recessed caves.
Impressive rock formations and recessed caves can be found all over Hocking Hills.

For couples up for it, the more strenuous Upper Trail has steps and steep elevation changes. Enjoy views of the cliffs and overlooks of the canopy. It’s especially gorgeous when painted with fall colors!
Hocking Hills Caves
For couples up for the 10.2-mile moderate-difficulty hike, the out-and-back Grandma Gatewood Hike connects Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, and Old Man’s Cave. Ash Cave and Old Man’s Cave are both recessed caves.
Ash Cave
The 0.5-mile loop to Ash Cave is moderately challenging but well worth it, as it’s one of the most beautiful spots in Hocking Hills. And talk about romantic – there was a wedding going on in front of the 90-foot-tall waterfall when we visited!
Just to the right of this waterfall, a couple was getting married!

Old Man’s Cave
Forbes voted the picturesque hike to Old Man’s Cave one of the best places to travel in 2023. The swirling waters of the Devil’s Bathtub were mesmerizing, and we loved seeing the kids splashing in the clear water at the bottom of the waterfall in the recess of the cave. There are steps, but the hike is slightly less than a mile.
Hearing the rushing water of Devil’s bathtub was such an experience!

Rock House Hocking Hills
Rock House offers hiking through a tunnel-like cavern 150 feet up inside a cliffside – a true cave! Standing inside, it’s easy to imagine the American Indians taking shelter.
It is only 0.8 miles long but is moderately challenging with steep grades and steps. Listen for the waterfall while hiking, and don’t miss the gorgeous stone bridge.

Other Nearby Hiking Areas
Wayne National Forest
For couples visiting longer than a weekend, check out the extensive hiking at Wayne National Forest. There are several harder trails of 12+ miles, but to experience the area without as much hiking, try the three-mile Paddle Creek Loop.

Lake Hope State Park
Lake Hope State Park is about 40 minutes from Hocking Hills and offers 17 miles of hiking trails, equestrian trails, and biking trails. There are more than 120 birds native to this area for birdwatchers!
Things to Do in Hocking Hills That Aren’t Hiking
Outdoor Activities
Hocking Hills is a place to reconnect with nature and enjoy the great outdoors. The activities you can do depend on the weather when you visit since Ohio is a 4-season state with below-freezing temps in the winter and hot summers. Activities include ziplining, fishing, bike riding, horseback riding, golfing, canoeing, and kayaking.
Some Hocking Hills trails can be explored via a romantic horseback ride!

We stayed at Getaway Cabins for a weekend. Our cabin was tucked away up a long road in the forest – some cabins do require four-wheel drive! We loved the loft bedroom, cozy electric fireplace, and hot tub on the back deck.

Hocking Hills Honeymoon Cabins
Spark romance in one of the private cabins with Hocking Hill Cabins. After a day of hiking, come back and enjoy a couples massage or soak together in the hot tub. Add on specials like romantic fireside bundles, a bed of roses, or Cupid’s services.
Glenlaurel, A Scottish Inn & Cottages
For a more upscale experience, stay in a suite or cottage at Glenlaurel. They offer a special romance package with nightly candlelit dinners, breakfasts, chocolates, and more.

Where to Eat in Hocking Hills
M & M Diner
We fueled up at M & M Diner every day before hitting the trails. I tried something different every day and my fiance stuck with his go-to – fluffy biscuits and savory sausage gravy. The cute M&M memorabilia throughout the diner and red-and-white checked tablecloths were so inviting!
Hocking Hills Winery
There’s something romantic about wine sampling, and Hocking Hills Winery was the perfect place to do it. We had a late lunch of pizza here. I enjoy drier red wines, and my partner enjoys sweeter blends, so it was nice that we could each customize a wine flight.
58 West
58 West has a more elevated menu and serves wines, craft beers, and cocktails. The atmosphere was charming and perfect for a romantic night out!
Traveling to Hocking Hills, OH, from Los Angeles
While there are a handful of local airports around Hocking Hills, OH, the closest major airport is Port Columbus International Airport. From here, couples drive about one hour to reach Hocking Hills.
Flights are offered through Spirit, American, Southwest, Delta, United, and other airlines. Direct flights are about 4.5 hours.
