There are certain things every traveler should experience at least once—incredible views of the Grand Canyon, cherry blossoms in D.C., and St. Patrick’s Day in New York City. My fiancé and I checked that last one off our bucket list last year, and let’s just say, one visit wasn’t enough to take in all that NYC has to offer for this celebration of Irish culture.

From the historic parade marching down 5th Avenue to lively Irish pubs serving up Guinness and whiskey floats, this green-hued celebration is unlike any other. Here’s a look at some incredible things to do when celebrating St. Paddy’s in NYC.

A Brief History of St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day was once a religious feast day in honor of St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland. This significant figure in Irish history is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

Today, St. Patrick’s Day is a worldwide celebration of Irish heritage. And with its huge Irish population, NYC offers one of the biggest celebrations in the United States.

The Legendary NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade

As one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade celebrations, New York City’s parade is hard to miss! The first parade celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in New York City passed through the streets on March 17th, 1762, just 14 days before the Declaration of Independence was signed. It was a time to celebrate Irish culture, wear green, and sing Irish songs, things that had been banned in Ireland.

NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Route

Today, the parade route starts at 5th Avenue and 44th Street at 11 am on March 17. It passes St. Patrick’s Cathedral on 50th Street and continues down the avenue to 79th Street,

The earliest parade was made up of Irish military members and ex-Irish patriots, but these days the parade is run by the registered NY state charity St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Inc. For people visiting New York the weekend after March 17th, don’t miss the White Plains St. Patrick’s Day Parade or Greenwich Village St. Patrick’s Day Parade
