Delicate petals unfurl in shades of blush, cream, and deep magenta. The air beside them fills with a light, sweet fragrance that signals the arrival of warm weather and blue skies in my childhood home, the Hoosier State. The peony, known for its lush blooms and timeless elegance, transforms Noblesville, Indiana, into a floral wonderland each May. As Indiana’s state flower, the peony perfectly represents the Hoosier state, which is maybe the most warm and welcoming place one could travel to in late spring.

When Noblesville, Indiana, launched the peony festival a few years ago, I was ecstatic. My favorite flower in my favorite place! What could be better?  The Indiana Peony Festival celebrates the Indiana state flower with a weekend of blushing floral displays and cheerful local vendors. Located in the heart of Hamilton County, this annual event delivers the perfect mix of garden tours, workshops, and artisan markets, making it an ideal girlfriend getaway. Now in its 5th year, the Indiana Peony Festival has become one of the most anticipated community events in the United States.

What to See and Do During the Peony Festival

The festival takes place in Noblesville’s Seminary Park at the exact moment when peony gardens are in full bloom. Timing is everything in the flower world! The festival’s charming marketplace takes over the park, and, of course, it features peony-inspired goods galore. We are talking peony bags, peony stationery, and peony shoes. If you can put a peony on it, it will probably be there. Of course, visitors will find fresh flowers galore for purchase from local peony growers. The walkable merchant locations make it easy to explore everything the Indiana Peony Festival has to offer.

As an aside, it is really hard to leave this place without armfuls of peonies. There are just so many varieties- each prettier than the next. I would suggest bringing a wagon, but Lord knows if I brought a wagon, I would accidentally fill up that entire wagon with enough peonies that my family might think I was opening up a flower shop. Or had a really obsessed secret admirer.

As much as we adore flower shopping and flower-inspired shopping, the peony festival also offers opportunities for horticulture education. Workshops at the festival allow attendees to learn from pro florists and horticulture experts during specialized horticulture classes. Sessions cover a range of topics, from selecting the right soil and fertilizers to arranging peonies into stunning bouquets. Kids’ activities throughout the festival ensure the whole family can enjoy the celebration.

Don’t miss the peony garden tours that give visitors a deeper understanding of the region’s history in peony cultivation. Expert local guides will share their knowledge about the different varieties of peony plants, the best practices for growing them in Indiana‘s climate, and the significance of the peony as the state flower recognized by the Indiana General Assembly. These tours also include insights into sustainable gardening techniques and the care required to maintain healthy and vibrant peony blooms year after year. Early June is the perfect time to learn about cultivating your own peony roots.

Festival Food for Flower Power

Food trucks and spirit trucks serve a variety of seasonal dishes and festival-themed treats that celebrate the flavors of spring. Visitors can enjoy freshly prepared meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, from farm-to-table salads to artisanal baked goods infused with floral notes. Peony-inspired food offerings include everything from delicate pastries with pink icing to creative cocktail concoctions. There is seriously something for everyone, making this festival a culinary experience as much as a floral one. It’s important to note that Friday night at the festival features special dining events at various locations, including Tinker Street.

Cool Things to Do in Noblesville

Beyond the festival, Noblesville has a seriously charming, Gilmore-Girl-style historic downtown. It is filled with cafes and independent shops. Antique enthusiasts will adore exploring the town square’s vintage stores, including Logan Village Mall and Noblesville Antiques on the Square. And while I couldn’t call myself a hardcore antique hound, I have not been able to walk away from these stores without a little something. Yes, I’ve collected everything from red-headed-themed Christmas decor (long story) to an entire kitchen table (maybe not so little). Just a short drive away, the boutiques on nearby E. Main St. in Carmel,  bring additional shopping and dining options.

Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts will love Potter’s Bridge Park. It is made up of walking trails with breathtaking views of the White River. It is an ideal location for an afternoon stroll. Just be sure to take note of where you’re going, or a little stroll might turn into a sweaty hike. I know this from experience. I also know that there are plenty of friendly Hoosiers who will point you in the right direction if you end up lost. If visitors are looking for even more adventure, Strawtown Koteewi Park has loads of it – horseback riding, hiking, ziplining, boating and, even, an archery range.

Music lovers converge at Ruoff Music Center, which hosts outdoor concerts and live music throughout the summer and has featured well-known artists such as Dave Matthews Band, Luke Bryan, and The Lumineers. It’s a place where visitors can dance like nobody’s watching while sipping on $10 beers under the moonlight!

Finally, if visitors are looking for a bit of culture, The Hamilton County Museum of History gives a glimpse into local history, while the Noblesville Creates campus, formerly called Nickel Plate Arts, supports creative experiences through rotating exhibits and hands-on workshops. The city’s beautification projects have created numerous floral installations throughout Noblesville’s historic Seminary Park.

Restaurants in Noblesville serve a heaping of that famous Hoosier hospitality in a mix of casual and upscale dining. Rosie’s Place is the place to stop for breakfast or brunch. They are well-known and loved for their scratch-made breakfast and bakery items. It is impossible to leave without having to unbutton your britches. So maybe just skip the buttons altogether. Grindstone Public House delivers a menu featuring local ingredients and craft cocktails in a cozy setting. The servers here will seem genuinely pleased to see you. It’s not a trick. They really are. It’s the Hoosier way. Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano serves beloved traditional Italian dishes with an extensive wine list. Expect heaping portions in a stay-awhile kind of place. Uptown Café makes delicious sandwiches, salads, and coffee in a relaxed setting where visitors are guaranteed to make a friend or two. 9th Street Bistro offers farm-to-table dining in an intimate, laid-back setting. Finally, for a sweet treat, Alexander’s on the Square features hand-dipped ice cream and classic soda fountain drinks in an ambiance that throws diners back to the 1950s.

Just a short, 10-minute drive from the heart of downtown is Spencer Farm Winery and Berry Farm. It is a must-visit for those who enjoy local wines and fresh, sun-kissed berries. The winery provides tastings in a relaxed farm setting, with a pick of wines crafted from regionally grown grapes. Visitors can also pick seasonal berries and grab a slice of homemade pie. Having done both in one day, it is probably a good idea to start with the berry picking and end with the wine tasting. The berry patch is not perfectly flat terrain, and berries can stain light-colored pants. Just sayin’.

Pro-tip: Nothing beats a slice of freshly baked Strawberry Pie from Spencers. Seriously, nothing.
