There’s something magical about packing up the car on a Friday afternoon, bribing the kids with snacks, loading enough luggage for what somehow looks like a month-long expedition, and heading south on Interstate 5 for a weekend adventure. Living in Los Angeles means we’re spoiled with incredible destinations nearby, but this family trip to San Diego reminded us why it’s one of the absolute best places in Southern California.
The drive is only about two hours, depending on traffic (okay, maybe closer to three if someone needs the bathroom every 20 minutes), making it the best way to escape city life without spending an entire day traveling. Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re planning your tenth San Diego family vacation, this city somehow manages to surprise you with something new every visit.

Downtown San Diego
Downtown San Diego is the perfect place to begin exploring because everything feels close together with easy access to restaurants, museums, parks, and the waterfront.

Seaport Village
A great place to start is Seaport Village; it sits along San Diego Bay, where scenic views of the harbor and Coronado Bridge greet you right out of the gate. The village is huge, filled with charming shops, eclectic galleries, quaint cafes, and a historic, hand-carved carousel—one of those charming spots where everyone somehow ends up smiling. Between waterfront views, quirky shops, musicians performing outside, and endless opportunities for ice cream, my kids convinced us we needed dessert before lunch because “vacations have different rules.” Honestly, they weren’t wrong.
SEAL Tour
If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure your kids won’t soon forget, book the SEAL tour at Seaport Village. This family-friendly tour takes you on a journey through San Diego on both land and sea aboard a Hydra-Terra amphibious vehicle. It’s a hit with kids and the inner kid of every adult!
Waterfront Park
Just a short walk away sits Waterfront Park, one of the city’s best and most fun playgrounds. The splash fountains keep the youngest kiddos entertained while the adults enjoy a moment of peace with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s one of those simple and free outdoor activities that gives everyone a chance to regroup and relax, kind-of.
The Embarcadero
When you’re ready to get back to it, head to The Embarcadero, which is just a walkway running along the harbor. Spend an awesome afternoon that includes a side of history by going aboard the legendary USS Midway Museum at Navy Pier.
Walking onto a real aircraft carrier is impressive enough for just about anyone, but stepping onto the restored flight deck absolutely amazed our kids. They climbed into cockpits, explored crew quarters, and asked approximately 4,000 questions about airplanes and carriers, all of which I couldn’t answer, before lunchtime.

Maritime Museum
We also visited the nearby Maritime Museum, where historic sailing ships and submarines tell fascinating stories about California’s naval history. You can make this a quick 1-hour walkthrough by walking across the decks and glancing at indoor exhibits, or, if the kids’ attention spans can handle it, spend more time. Take a self-guided tour, go below deck on vessels like the Star of India, and stroll around the model gallery. Both museums make for an educational experience that feels more like the movie Top Gun and less like school.
Little Italy
As sunset approaches and everyone is posing by the bay for golden-hour Instagram photos, wander into Little Italy, one of the liveliest neighborhoods in the city.
Every corner smells like fresh pizza, homemade pasta, and freshly baked bread, so basically heaven. Street patios buzz with conversation while families stroll between restaurants. We enjoyed an unforgettable Italian dinner before ending the night with—you guessed it—even more ice cream.

Balboa Park
No San Diego itinerary is complete without spending a full day at Balboa Park, and you will definitely need a full day or more. Calling it just a park feels wildly unfair. It’s practically an entire Spanish-themed city filled with gardens. My favorite one is the Alcázar Garden. There are 17 museums to explore, live performers, and the San Diego Zoo.

Fleet Science Center
The first stop for our curious crew was the Fleet Science Center, where the hands-on room, filled with over 100 exhibits, kept everyone entertained for hours. Every button seemed designed specifically for kids who love touching absolutely everything. This science museum hosts an IMAX screen that runs cool science films, plus a planetarium and STEM camps.
Model Railroad Museum
Next door, the Model Railroad Museum became an unexpected highlight. My kids love trains! And apparently, once you love trains, you always love trains! There are working scale model trains and their routes. It’s so cool to watch those tiny trains travel through incredibly detailed miniature cities. We all stood there saying, “Wow.”
Pro-Tips For Visiting Balboa Park
One of my favorite surprises in Balboa Park was discovering that some museums offer free admission on select days or on rotating schedules for local residents. It’s always worth checking ahead before your visit.
To make sightseeing more entertaining, we created a family scavenger hunt. Whoever spotted the next fountain, sculpture, or colorful tile first earned the privilege of choosing our next snack stop. Needless to say, everyone suddenly developed eagle eyesight.
San Diego Zoo
The San Diego Zoo lives up to its reputation. It’s no wonder why it’s the city’s #1 attraction. Our visit felt like we were strolling through the African prairie with elephants just hanging out. The Skyfari Tram is every mom’s joy; you get a bird’s-eye view of all animals and happenings while being transported from one side of the zoo to the other, all while sitting! The kids loved watching playful primates, towering giraffes, sleepy koalas, and especially the massive polar bears, who somehow looked cooler than the rest of us despite California’s sunny weather.

Beaches, and Ocean Views
Next up, beach day.
Our first destination was La Jolla Cove, easily one of the best spots along the West Coast to see wildlife, thanks to its protected marine habitat for sea lions, seabirds, fish, and even sea turtles.
I recommend booking a kayak tour or snorkeling tour. This way, your family can explore hidden sea caves and float around kelp forests bursting with ocean dwellers. If you’re lucky, you may spot a friendly leopard shark! Just around the corner sits the famous Children’s Pool, another wonderful viewing area where visitors can safely observe seals resting on the beach.

La Jolla Shores and Birch Aquarium
In my opinion, La Jolla Shores is one of the city’s most beautiful sandy beaches, and it’s ideal for families with little kids, young kids, younger kids, and honestly, adults who simply enjoy not stepping on rocks. The calm water makes it perfect for swimming, sandcastle competitions, and relaxing beach days.

Nearby, Birch Aquarium offers fascinating exhibits showcasing local marine life, colorful tropical fish, playful seahorses, and educational displays about ocean science and marine conservation efforts. The aquarium is especially wonderful during the winter months when outdoor swimming may not be quite as appealing.
We didn’t have to wait for low tide, to go tide pooling at Tide Pool Plaza; we found colorful sea stars, tiny crabs, and sea anemones. The slimier the better for my kiddos, who treated every discovery like finding buried treasure.
Mission Beach and Belmont Park
Mission Beach offers everything you imagine when thinking about California summers: surfers, cyclists, volleyball players, endless boardwalks, and happy families enjoying the sunshine.
Right beside the beach sits Belmont Park, a historic amusement park packed with thrilling roller coasters, arcade games, miniature golf, and seaside treats.
Whether your family loves adrenaline or simply watching everyone else scream on rides, it’s impossible not to have a great time. The younger kids preferred the gentler attractions while older siblings tackled the bigger rides. Everyone won. Especially the churro stand.

The San Diego Mission Bay (waterfront) resort is a great middle-ground choice for families who want plenty to do without going all-out luxury. There’s a private beach, large pool, kids’ wading pool, water-sports rentals, bikes, lawn games and on-site dining. Its Mission Bay location also puts families close to SeaWorld and the ocean beaches.
Luxury: Hotel del Coronado
For a memorable splurge, it’s hard to beat the iconic Hotel del Coronado. Families can walk straight onto Coronado Beach, enjoy resort pools and seasonal activities, and explore the shops and restaurants nearby. The historic property itself is part of the experience, making it a destination where you won’t necessarily need to leave the resort.
Practical Tips for Families
One thing we quickly learned is that having a rental car makes exploring every part of San Diego much easier. While public transportation works well in certain areas, traveling between beaches, museums, and attractions becomes much simpler with your own vehicle.

Arrive early whenever possible because every popular parking lot fills surprisingly fast,.Especially during school holidays and weekends.
Balance busy attractions with relaxing stops like parks and beaches. It kept everyone happier and prevented the dreaded afternoon meltdown—both for the children and, occasionally, the adults.
