Coachella

For two glorious weekends every April, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival rises from the Indio desert like a glitter-covered mirage, taking over the Empire Polo Club near Palm Springs. For a brief moment in time, the palm trees sway, the bass rattles the mountains, and every music lover there agrees that sunscreen is a priceless commodity. Coachella is more than a music festival—it’s a full-blown social event, cultural moment, and lifestyle experience rolled into one very dusty, very iconic desert party.

Yes, the music is massive. Coachella consistently pulls some of the biggest names on the planet, not to mention a fair share of Hollywood royalty (Los Angeles is just a hop, skip, and freeway ride away). Past lineups have delivered truly unforgettable performances—Beyoncé’s legendary Beychella set in 2018 still lives rent-free in our minds, alongside show-stoppers from Charli XCX, 21 Savage, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, and Lady Gaga. And that list doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface.

The experience, however, depends heavily on which weekend you choose—and that choice matters.

Weekend One

Weekend One is the land of influencers, the see-and-be-seens, and the fashion Olympics. Cameras are everywhere, outfits are immaculate, and surprise guest appearances are at an all-time high. This is also when artists tend to bring out their most famous musical friends, hey girl, hey!,- turning sets into once-in-a-lifetime collaborations that feel like they could go on forever (and sometimes do). Lady Gaga’s performance? Absolute cinema. Two-plus hours that felt like a Hollywood production—perfect choreography, countless costume changes, and fireworks erupting during Born This Way. Every artist seems powered by the Energizer Bunny, playing hit after hit like they’re afraid the desert might cut the mic if they slow down.

Weekend Two

Weekend Two, on the other hand, is noticeably more relaxed. The crowds are chiller, the vibes are softer, and people are more focused on settling into their space, reconnecting with friends, and soaking in the sets they actually came to see. While the lineup may not have quite the same surprise-factor as weekend one, it’s still wildly exciting—and many would argue, more enjoyable.

Love it or side-eye it, Coachella is undoubtedly the apex of pop culture. Even as ticket prices climb into the thousands, people keep coming. They come for the music. They stay for the spontaneous break-dancing circles that draw a crowd, the fireworks exploding above the Ferris wheel, the people-watching, the outfits, the art installations, the food, and the desert-perfect weather. A quick reality check: will-call lines can be mildly traumatizing. But the second they slap that wristband on you and send you through the gates, it all feels worth it.

Insider Tips

Now, let’s talk survival. Coachella is in the desert. It is dry. It is blisteringly hot during the day. And somehow—mysteriously—it becomes dusty and borderline freezing by the time you’re trudging back to your ride at night. Hydration is not optional (this means actual water, not the “water” bottle you smuggled in). Shade breaks are sacred. Bring a flannel. Bring a bandana (outlaw-style over your mouth is not just a look, it’s a necessity) for those dusty end-of-night walks. Coachella is one of the biggest music festivals in the world and regularly fights for the title of best music festival—along with your attention, hydration, and dust tolerance. It isn’t just something you attend—it’s something you experience, and talk about forever.

Where To Stay

There are loads of lodging options for Coachella. Depending on the experience you’re hoping for, here are a few ideas. Camping at Coachella is wildly popular, with general/ car/tent sites at the Empire Polo Club groundsLake Eldorado offers resort-style tents, and Safari Campgrounds is the spot for luxury glamping. If you’re hoping to get out of the dust and into a soft bed, head to Hampton Inn Suites Indio, where you have free hot breakfast and WIFI so you can update, post, and like the Coachella reels from the day. Best of all, it is one of the shuttle stops to/from the festival, helping you avoid the driving chaos. Check Valley Music Travel for more shuttle info.

Outside Lands

The Outside Lands Music Festival feels like an arts festival, food crawl, and concert rolled into one. With the Taste of the Bay Area on full display, you’ll snack between sets while catching artists like Bloc Party, Vampire Weekend, and surprise hip-hop acts, all while fog rolls in like a dramatic encore. It’s where music, wine, beer, art, and yes… cannabis, all come together in that effortlessly tasteful, California-cool way. Think: festival energy with a side of sourdough sophistication. Being a Bay Area native, I may be biased, but probably not.

IMO, there are three non-negotiables for Outside Lands. First, you must love music. And not just one kind. Rock, indie, dance, jam, soul, hip-hop, funk—it’s all here, sprinkled across multiple stages for a full-on immersive music adventure. Even if you don’t recognize half the lineup, trust me: a tune, a vocal, or a beat will stop you mid-bite, mid-sip, mid-conversation, and next thing you know, it’s all heart eye emojis and frantic iTunes downloads.

Second, you must love food. Loving food is not enough—you need to commit to food. Tasting it. Smelling it. Needing more of it five minutes later. With over 100 restaurants and 800 menu items, Outside Lands doesn’t just showcase the Bay Area food scene—it overwhelms it, lovingly.

Third, you must love wine country. Because when in Rome!  You will sip Napa and Sonoma Valley wines in the middle of Golden Gate Park, like this is totally normal behavior. World-class pours, casually enjoyed between sets, all because this is San Francisco and we’re fancy like that.

Speaking of San Fran, there’s something quietly magical about the venue; wandering through Golden Gate Park while music filters through the fog. The festival unfolds in distinct little worlds—Wine Lands, Beer Lands, Grass Lands, Flower Lands, Cocktail Magic, Outsider Art—you get it; each with its own vibe and personality. Bonus points for the grass underfoot. Concrete festivals and I are no longer on speaking terms. My joints (the bone kind) have drawn a firm boundary, and Outside Lands respects that.

The food is lit (just channeling my Gen Alpha teen). The atmosphere is excellent. The community deepens year after year. And the performances are epic—there’s always at least one moment that will absolutely blow your mind. Where else are you going to experience something like Big Freedia performing with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus? Or stumble into a drag show at the Oasis that is joyful, outrageous, and surprisingly heartwarming? These moments make Outside Lands truly one of a kind.

Insider Tips

Despite taking place in August, Outside Lands may be one of the coldest festivals on earth. I’m talking hoodie-and-flannel-or-else territory. When the sun dips and the fog rolls in—thick, fluffy, and aggressively chilly—it’s like being wrapped in an ice blanket you did not consent to. Fashion is important, but warmth is survival.

Outside Lands is a full-body Bay Area experience. Come for the music, stay for the food, wine, fog, and the very real possibility of shivering while having the best weekend of your life.

Where To Stay

Booking a room at the Stanyan Park Hotel puts you right on the fringe of Golden Gate Park, making it super easy to walk to/from the festival. The Stanyan has a Victorian vibe and is surrounded by tree-lined streets and quaint, relaxing cafes, which is perfect for chilling out after a heart-pumping festival day.

BottleRock Napa Valley Music Festival

When it comes to music festivals, I like to think I’m a little bit country and a little bit rock ’n’ roll—and ideally holding a very good glass of wine. Enter BottleRock Napa Valley, the festival that understands balance. It’s relaxed but polished, high-energy but never chaotic, with a lineup that hits hard and food that hits harder. Honestly, it’s a rare festival where your biggest dilemma might be choosing between a front-row spot or a lobster corndog.

Held every May in the heart of Napa, BottleRock is a three-day celebration that pairs legendary headliners with chef-driven culinary experiences. We’re talking about artists like Justin Timberlake, Benson Boone (yes, Swoon is more appropriate), Pearl Jam, Zac Brown Band, and the forever-shirtless Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The music is only half the story here. BottleRock doubles as a full-blown food and wine festival, with pop-ups from acclaimed chefs, gourmet bites that feel wildly fancy for a field, and local Napa Valley wines flowing freely. Caviar? Check. Lobster? Absolutely. Suddenly, you’re eating like royalty while singing along to a rock anthem, which feels both indulgent and weirdly correct.

The grounds are easy to navigate, the crowd is refreshingly chill, and the vibe leans more “weekend getaway” than “festival survival.” And for those who appreciate the finer things—like personal space and functioning plumbing—there are VIP upgrades, including air-conditioned restrooms. Trust me, this may not sound glamorous until it’s 90 degrees, you’ve been dancing all afternoon, and you realize AC bathrooms are the real headliners.

BottleRock Napa isn’t about roughing it. It’s about great music, great food, great wine, and enjoying it all at a pace and decibel level that lets you savor every moment. Come for the lineup, stay for the culinary flex, and leave wondering why all festivals can’t be this delicious.Top of Form

Where To Stay

If festival camping is on your bucket list, claim your spot at Camp Caneros at Skyline Wilderness Park and be among plenty of BottleRock goers. Tent/RV camping is available here with amenities you’ll be grateful for, like hot showers, a shuttle to the venue, and a taco truck! If you’re feeling bougie or just want a warm bed to lie your head, nothing beats a stay at Napa River Inn. This hotel is in historic Napa Mill, situated on the river and offers plush accommodations and plenty of French pastries. It is also home to the Fink Lounge, which is part tavern, part speakeasy, and all swank.

Wildflower Music Festival

From the moment you step onto the grass at the Wildflower Music Festival, it feels like Chico at its very best—sun on your shoulders, music floating through the air, and the unmistakable buzz of a community coming together. It’s no surprise this Best of Chico award-winning festival draws a crowd. This is an all-day celebration where local favorites share the stage with national touring acts, and whether you’re posted up for your favorite band, stumbling upon a new obsession, or simply letting the rhythm carry you from set to set, the energy is infectious.

And the music is just the beginning. You’ll find a lineup of local bites and sips that make the sets sound even better—food trucks slinging comfort and creativity, ice-cold Sierra Nevada brewskies in hand, La Rocca wines poured just right, and artisan vendors around every corner. Honestly, put the word artisan in front of anything and I’m already in. Hook, line, and sinker.

Kid Zone

The Wildflower Fest is family-friendly too, which means no scrambling for a sitter. The dedicated Kid Zone is a full-on playground of bounce houses, face painting, crafts, and tie-dye stations—because, yes, you are in Chico after all. Kids are happy, parents are relaxed, and everyone gets to soak in the fun.

Giving Back

The Wildflower Festival isn’t just a party—it’s a celebration with purpose. The silent auction and 50/50 raffle raise funds for the Wildflower Open Classroom, supporting hands-on education for the next generation of makers, thinkers, and dreamers. It’s music, food, laughter, and local pride all wrapped into one unforgettable day—exactly the kind of experience that reminds you why Chico does community so well.

Where To Stay

Hotel Katerina offers a unique lodging experience that is nature-inspired with an equestrian vibe, with restaurants like the Ranchers Daughter and the Rooftop Bar, get ready to hear unexpected stories and find new friends. For all camp lovers, and those looking for an affordable, convenient option…with showers and power, Silver Dollar Fairgrounds is ready to be your Wildflower festival home base.

Joshua Tree Music Festival

Listen, the desert is having its moment when it comes to music festivals! If you can’t make it to Coachella, in other words, can’t drop that kind of coin, or you’re bummed that Desert Daze moved its show from California to British Columbia, consider the Joshua Tree Music Festival that rolls through in May. It’s everything you love about music, plus camping under a billion stars (no brag!), all set near Joshua Tree National Forest in the Mojave Desert, AKA magical.

Set against the wide-open backdrop of Joshua Tree, this is where music lovers find their new favorite artists. The stages are intimate enough that you can see the emotion on a singer’s face, feel the vibrations in your chest, and lock eyes with a musician mid-song in a way that feels almost conspiratorial—like you’ve been let in on a secret.

Insider Tips

But the magic doesn’t stop when the music does. This festival offers even more. Workshops inspire, and nourish the mind, body, and soul. You might start your day stretching into the desert morning at a yoga workshop, find yourself journaling in the shade by noon, and end it dancing barefoot under the stars to your new favorite band—no schedule required, just curiosity. The Spring Joshua Tree Music Festival isn’t about chasing the biggest name on a lineup. It’s about connection—through music, and community.

Where To Stay

All festival tickets include walk-in tent camping at Joshua Tree Lake Campground and RV, which means park in the day parking and walk your gear into the campground. Wristbands are required. That being said, sites are first-come, first-served, so plan accordingly. The campground has hot showers and cool down showers, which is brillant! There is also free filtered water, free WIFI and ice available for purchase. If camping isn’t your thing, like ever…how does a rustic, mid-century bungalow in the Mojave Desert sound? Rattler Ranch offers solitude, clear starry skies and an Old West feel in each of its private cabins so you can skip the festival noise without skipping on desert splendor.

So Many Festivals, So Little Time

Beyond the headliners, California’s soul lives in its smaller, local gatherings. There are Ohana Festivals in San Diego, Mill Valley Jams, Santa Cruz Beachside Shows; even a spontaneous day trip to an annual festival with free admission can turn into core memories. You might stumble upon Rilo Kiley on a reunion bill, Stick Figure vibing at a coastal stage, or a cultural festival that blends music with art festivals, community pride, and a little Mardi Gras energy—minus the beads, plus better weather. If you’re a true music lover, California isn’t just a destination—it’s a playlist you can drive through. So pick one or make your way to all of these music festivals and experience a musical journey like never before.
