When Should You Start Visiting Colleges?

Ideally, you should start visiting colleges when your high schooler is a sophomore or junior. However, if you’re like me, you didn’t get the memo! Or, if you’re really on it, you started dreaming of college tours when your kiddos were in middle school. Either way, if you want to pack the 1-2 punch with tours and vacation, it’s important to create a vacation schedule that works for everyone and makes the most of the time you have.

Plan Your Destinations Wisely

For instance, instead of just visiting one or two campuses, consider making a mini-road trip out of it! California colleges are a popular choice, and let’s face it: who wouldn’t want to explore sunny California while checking out university and state colleges along with private colleges? Grab a map, plot out your route, and make a list of the best family vacation spots along the way. Visiting UC Berkeley? Take a day trip to the UC Botanical Garden and stroll under native redwoods, and take in views of San Francisco. Drive the scenic Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu and tour Pepperdine University. Head to UC San Diego, and after touring the massive campus, reward your family with a trip to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Weekend Tours vs. Weekdays

If possible, aim for weekend tours. But be warned: these can be crowded, and there’s nothing quite like a group of overzealous parents trying to outsmart each other in the admissions game. Weekdays are often quieter but require a bit more juggling of your family’s vacation schedule.

Turn a College Tour into Family Fun

Capture the Memories

Bring along a camera, AKA your smartphone, to document the journey. Not only will it give you something to show off later, It’s a good way to remember the stand out features of different colleges. Plus, you can create a fun scrapbook that highlights both the college and your family shenanigans. “Look, there’s little Timmy pretending to study while the rest of us are at the beach!”

Incorporate Educational Pit Stops

To keep the academic spirit alive, add in some educational pit stops on your way to college tours. Who knows, maybe your high schooler will come home with newfound knowledge and a desire to pursue an MBA degree instead of a bachelor’s degree!

Mix College Tours with Fun Activities

College tours can feel like drinking from a fire hose. To keep your high schoolers and their siblings from completely losing their minds during the tours, balance the information overload with plenty of breaks and some family fun.
