For families starting their trip in Phoenix, JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa is an easy, all-in-one home base before heading north to the Grand Canyon.  We loved the outdoor pools, a lazy river, and multiple water slides (yes—even adults were using them), it’s the kind of resort where kids are entertained without much effort.

Our Afternoons naturally revolved around the pool, where the energy felt lively but still manageable. Even later in the day, it was possible to find seating. We  rented  a cabana which made it even easier to settle in. The desert landscaping and distant mountain  reminded us we were in Arizona.

The resort is also very walkable, perfect for kids. Our room was close to everything, and we were able to explore the property, including a small botanical garden.

There are multiple on-site restaurants, poolside service, and even room service that can be ordered directly from your phone. The food was consistently good, though prices are on the higher side.

Pro-Tip: Outside food isn’t allowed in the pool area, and they take this rule seriously with bag checks.

A practical tip families will appreciate: the pool deck gets extremely hot by midday. Leaving sandals or water shoes right by the pool makes getting in and out much easier.

This luxury hotel works best for families with older kids. Between the hot deck, cacti throughout the property, and water features designed for confident swimmers, it’s a better fit for kids who can move around independently.

Sedona is one of the most scenic nearby towns in Northern Arizona, and staying here offers a completely different experience from Phoenix or the Grand Canyon itself. Resorts like Enchantment Resort place visitors right in the middle of Sedona’s red rock landscape, offering a quieter, more immersive stay.

For families looking to break up the drive, Sedona is worth the stop, not just for the views, but for the activities. One standout experience is the Pink Jeep Tour, which offers guided access into the mountains themselves. It’s worth noting that tours vary widely in intensity. The one we chose was long and extremely bumpy, with steep descents that felt intense at times, which the kids thought was the best thing ever!

Beyond guided tours, Sedona offers plenty of family-friendly hiking options and easy access to Oak Creek Canyon, making it a great balance of adventure and relaxation.

Pro-Tip: Parking in Sedona can be tight, especially around the main shopping areas, so it’s worth factoring in extra time if you plan to explore the shops and restaurants.

The Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon (Tusayan, AZ)

For families who want to stay as close as possible to the Grand Canyon South Rim, The Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon offers one of the most convenient locations available. Just outside the south entrance, it provides easy access, making early mornings and quick park visits much more manageable.

Recently renovated, the hotel feels updated and comfortable, with clean guest rooms, spacious bathrooms, and a cozy, lodge-style design. There’s even a small outdoor deck area that offers a nice place to unwind after a long day.

For families who want a quieter, more relaxed stop, Flagstaff offers a completely different environment with cooler temperatures and access to ponderosa pine forests.

Little America Hotel is known for its large property and peaceful setting, giving families space to spread out and recharge. After the intensity of travel days and canyon visits, this slower pace is a much-needed reset.

Flagstaff also offers casual dining, grocery stores, and easy access to other parts of Northern Arizona, making it a flexible option for overnight stays or extended trips.

The accommodations are simple, but the location is the real draw. Staying inside the park means avoiding long entrance lines during peak season and having immediate access to the canyon rim.

For visitors traveling during summer months or peak season, this can be a major advantage, especially when wait times to enter the park can stretch to several hours.

When You Go

Getting to Grand Canyon Resorts for L.A. Families

For Los Angeles families, Phoenix is typically the easiest entry point, with direct flights from LAX taking about 1.5 hours. From there, it’s about a 3.5 to 4 hour drive to the Grand Canyon South Rim, depending on your route and stops.

Many families choose to break up the drive with a stop in Sedona, which offers a natural midpoint with plenty of activities. Most visitors stay on the South Rim, which is easier to reach and navigate, with more viewpoints, services, and lodging options.
