Over the years, my teenage daughter and I have taken countless little road trips around California, where we’ve lived her whole life and half of mine. We’ve explored beautiful beaches, every kind of museum imaginable, the quirkiest roadside attractions, and secret spots along the way, many only known to locals. These mini-adventures have included long weekends, spontaneous coastal drives, and a couple of carefully planned week-long adventures with a loaded car and the dog by our side.

Legos and laughs with my mini me ❤️
We’ve stitched all of these family escapes into a perfect itinerary for those who want to see the best of California but only have a week or so to do it. Here are the best 7 days in California, a coastal family road trip, packed with spectacular sights, drool-worthy eats, and unforgettable experiences from San Diego to San Francisco.

How To Use This Guide
Who wants to rush through a frantic checklist-filled vacation? Instead, here’s a trip that’s flexible, human-paced, and full of experiences we know families will actually enjoy.
We think of this road trip as “do a little or do a lot.” It’s a big, epic California journey made up of smaller adventures, each drawn from places we know and love, so you can move at your own pace and still get the best of it. And for those of you who live in California, or have been before, use this itinerary as a deep dive into some of the cities we mention.

Chillin’ with the coolest bears 🐻❄️
At each destination, we offer several experiences, and all are noteworthy. From eating bibimbap and churros at an off-the-beaten-path food hall in San Diego to wandering Dutch-like streets in Solvang to a long weekend antiquing in Santa Barbara, or a couple days wine tasting in Paso Robles. Take a spontaneous beach drive (and gondola serenade) at Morro Bay, or watch the most incredible sunset from a cliff in Big Sur. It’s your family and your choice.
For first-time visitors, it’s a “greatest hits” of California. For locals, it’s a chance to savor your home state from angles you may have missed.

Just two hippos in love, and kissing like no one’s watching… underwater style 💦
Why This Road Trip Works for Families
California is enormous. Trying to “see it all” in one trip is a recipe for exhaustion. Traveling with my daughter has taught me that the magic happens when you focus on regions rather than rigid lists of places to go. You’ll be covering two-thirds of California from San Diego to San Francisco, and following the coastline keeps drive times reasonable, with many options along the way.
You’ll still view iconic sights that everyone wants to see, have hands-on experiences that engage both kids and adults, and have moments of quiet when you just sit, breathe, and watch the waves or sunsets. Of course, California also has the most amazing places to eat; every location has food worth planning around (farmers’ markets, local pastries, seafood, and many family-friendly restaurants).

Rolling through California, one bite at a time 🍣
In that vein, think of this as a menu, not a mandate. You can spend your time at one stop per day, or linger in one destination for three. You can make it a 7-day road trip or stretch it into 8–11 days, or more if you have the time. Every stop can stand alone as a mini getaway, which is exactly how my daughter and I discovered and experienced most of them.
Day 1–3: San Diego Sun, Zoos, and Waterfront Fun
San Diego is the smartest launch point logistically for a California coastal road trip. Flying in from out of state, San Diego immediately welcomes visitors with sunshine and a laid-back vibe that makes it easy to shake off travel fatigue, making it the perfect first stop. For families, it’s a gentle introduction to the Golden State (recovery from jet lag), and there’s so much to do to keep kids of all ages engaged. Southern California is also super relaxed. Those vibes rub off, so adults can quickly get into vacay mode, too.
Where To Eat In San Diego

Eating local never tasted so good 😋❤️
Looking for casual and fun? My daughter and I recommend fueling up at Liberty Station, a former naval training center transformed into a lively hub of arts, culture, and gastronomy. It’s within an enclosed campus-like area, and honestly, it feels like a local secret waiting to be discovered, but it’s just a really cool place to hang out (think Foodhallen in Amsterdam).

Decisions, decisions… everything looks delicious! 😋
Check out the mosaics, murals, and public art installations, and watch them spark curiosity in kids. Both younger kids and teens will love exploring the small boutiques offering unique souvenirs. The food stalls have everything from fresh poke bowls and hand-rolled sushi to tacos, ramen, crepes, kabobs, lobster, and artisanal chocolates. My grub-loving daughter had Boba from one vendor, chicken fingers from another, crepes from another, and loved being able to pick and choose. Stop by the creative little shops. linger over a coffee, grab an empanada and some Wicked Popcorn, and soak in the artsy-foodie atmosphere.

Wickedly delicious bites 🍿💛
Also, don’t miss dining with ocean views, which is part of the San Diego experience. Pacifica Del Mar is great for an early sunset dinner, while The Fish Market Downtown offers fresh seafood in a fun, casual setting where younger kids can see what’s on the menu right from the harbor. Brigantine Seafood and Oyster Bar at Portside Pier is always a win with families, thanks to its famous fish tacos, kid-friendly options, and relaxed waterfront atmosphere.

Happiness in a bowl 🥢❤️

More than food—treasures everywhere 🛍️💖
What To Do In San Diego
Not Your Typical Zoos
No trip to San Diego is complete without visiting the San Diego Zoo, located in the lush and sprawling Balboa Park. Even if your kids have been to zoos elsewhere (and we’ve been to many), this one is unique. The open-air, naturalistic exhibits house over 4,000 animals across 10 climate zones spanning 100 acres, and yes, if you’re wondering, it is the largest zoo in the world. Watch as your kid’s eyes light up when they spot the red panda or hear that lion roar in the distance. And the monkeys always make for hilarious photo moments.

Elephant-sized smiles all around 🐘💛

Little furballs, huge personalities 🐾❤️

Pink perfection, peaceful vibes 💕🦩
For families who want to venture a bit further, the San Diego Safari Park in Escondido, about a 35-minute drive north, is a must. Unlike a traditional zoo, the Safari Park replicates a wild safari experience. My daughter’s favorite thing was seeing the giraffes roam in their expansive five-star habitats. I was mesmerized watching rhinos and zebras chilling together as we drove by in our African tram and guided tour.

Roaming with our favorite creatures 🦒💖

Long necks, even longer hearts 🦒💕
Home to over 3000 animals representing over 300 species, this 1,800-acre wildlife park is a chance to feel like you’re on safari, while also receiving a hands-on understanding of wildlife and conservation efforts around the globe. Trying to decide between the Zoo and the Safari Park? Why not both!

Just hanging out with our long-necked pals 🦒💛
SeaWorld San Diego
Another highlight for families is SeaWorld San Diego, with both marine life and theme park fun. Dolphins, sea lions, and orcas perform incredible feats, and rides range from gentle carousel-style experiences to adrenaline-pumping roller coasters.

Who knew cohabitation could be this cute? 🐢🐊💖
Kayaking In Caves and Coves
I had a blast kayaking with my daughter on Everyday California’s eco-friendly tour of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve. Part of the larger La Jolla Underwater Park, the 6,000-acre marine protected waters are full of incredible sea life. It was such a fun way to spend the day outdoors and get into the iconic Pacific Ocean.

Floating with friends, finned and furry 🦭🛶❤️

Eco-adventures in every stroke 🌱
Gaslamp Energy
For a more urban contrast to San Diego’s beaches and wildlife attractions, the Gaslamp Quarter delivers energy, history, and personality all in one walkable neighborhood. Known as the heart of San Diego’s nightlife, this historic district blends beautifully preserved Victorian-era architecture with a modern edge. During the day, it’s fun to wander the streets, hop on the historic trolley, browse art galleries and boutiques, or grab ice cream at a local parlor while watching street performers. As evening sets in, the neighborhood transforms with open-air dining, rooftop bars, and lively restaurants (ranging from casual family-friendly spots to upscale lounges and classic Irish pubs). The Gaslamp also has a theatrical side, with live music and comedy shows at venues like the Balboa Theatre. There are even a few ghost stories woven into the Gaslamp Quarter’s history, adding just enough intrigue to make your kids remember this experience well after you get home.

Where To Stay In San Diego
If you want to stay close to San Diego’s top attractions, downtown hotels like the Alma San Diego Downtown, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel, and Pendry San Diego are excellent choices. They’re both family-friendly, with rooftop pools and stylish rooms, and they put you within proximity to Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, Seaport Village, the USS Midway, and the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter. These hotels are perfect if your focus is exploring the city, dining out, and enjoying easy access to sights without worrying about parking.

From battleships to memories—USS Midway stands tall 🛳️. sven-piper – Unsplash
My family loves the beach and can’t get enough of it (and we live a block away from the beach IRL), so for families who want beach days right outside their door, oceanfront and bayside hotels offer a different kind of convenience and fun. The iconic Hotel del Coronado on Coronado Island gives direct access to wide sandy beaches, pools, and plenty of family activities, while resorts like the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa at Mission Bay, Kona Kai Resort & Spa on Shelter Island, and the Pacific Terrace Hotel in Pacific Beach provide calm water, ocean views, and walkable paths for kids to explore. These options are all within a 10–25 minute drive of downtown, so you can easily combine beach relaxation with city sightseeing. Teens will love the boardwalk culture at Pacific and Mission Beach, while younger kids will enjoy the calm water and open spaces at Mission Bay.

The classic beauty of the Hotel del Coronado meets LEGO creativity 🏨🧱💖
Optional Day In Carlsbad
Build Magic In LEGOland
Driving north for about 45 minutes brings you to Legoland California in Carlsbad, a secret weapon for family road trips. The little ones are over the moon with every ride, and the teens? They’ll roll their eyes…but then probably sneak in a few requests for more rides on the LEGO® Technic Coaster. It’s kid-perfect, teen-tolerable, and parent-approved chaos all in one.

Legoland magic for all ages means BIG thrills from tiny bricks! 🧱❤️

This is the coaster the kids can’t get enough of 🎢🧱❤️

Gliding through the LEGO lagoon 🛶🧱❤️ Mini boats = maximum joy!
We typically spend a full day here, and always start with Miniland USA (my daughter loves this!!!) to see the meticulously built miniature LEGO® cities. She is obsessed! There’s also a water park section that’s perfect for sunny afternoons. Restaurants inside Legoland cater to families, offering everything from burgers and pizza to healthier options, and the park is stroller-friendly for younger children.

Home run happiness in LEGO style 🧱⚾❤️
Strum At The Museum of Making Music
Next to Legoland California is the Museum of Making Music, which, if you have the time, I highly recommend, as it will nurture those budding musicians in the family.

Exploring the art of sound. History never sounded so good 🎸💛

Experimenting with instruments like a tiny Beethoven 🎶🎩

This Museum of Making Music is shockingly fun ⚡🎹✨” It’s where keyboards spark more than music ⚡

Drumroll please… I’m a future rockstar 🥁✨ Currently auditioning for the next world tour!
Explore Carlsbad Lagoon
The Carlsbad Lagoon is a laid-back outdoor playground where you can kayak, paddleboard, jet ski, or just cruise on the water. California WaterSports is the perfect place to stick your kids in a kayak on a windy day, and they’ll for sure burn off energy. It’s easy, sunny fun that works for everyone.

Kayak, cruise, or just float your worries away 🛶💛” Jet, paddle, splash… all in a day 🌊

Kayak buddies for life 🛶❤️
Make Keepsakes At Barrio Glassworks
And if you only have time for one thing in Carlsbad, make a reservation to do glass-blowing at Barrio Glassworks. The owners, Gary and his son Drew, will show you how to blow your own glass paperweight to keep. This was the highlight of the day for my daughter, and we now have the most beautiful keepsake that she made by hand.

Hot glass, cool experience at Barrio Glassworks 😎🔥

From flame to form at Barrio Glassworks 🔥 This is not your average art class.

Proof that art can be heartfelt and worldly ❤️🌍 Barrio Glassworks
Where To Stay In Carlsbad
If you decide to make Carlsbad your last day in the San Diego area and want to stay overnight, we love The Cassara Carlsbad, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, which has on-site restaurants, including the Karl Strauss Brewing Company. You can taste your way through Carlsbad Village with Carlsbad Food Tours and then enjoy a cozy dinner at Campfire. My daughter loved the creative wood-fired dishes and, of course, the s’mores. Or join the lively party atmosphere at Casa de Bandini, where every day feels like Cinco de Mayo.

Day 3–5: Los Angeles Iconic Sights, Hidden Gems, and the Rich and Famous
Los Angeles can feel overwhelming at first. With endless freeways, sprawling neighborhoods, and a dizzying amount of attractions, some spots are distinctly LA, meaning Instagram-worthy and full of personality. It’s a city of movie stars, glitz, and wealth, but also full of everyday Angelinos and, uhh… a lot of actors!
For us, even though we live here, there are always little surprises that make exploring LA feel like a treasure hunt. With a little planning, families can soak in both the iconic landmarks and the locally loved places that make LA truly special. Also, please note, you could literally stay in LA for a full week and still not see everything, so just know you’ll have to see one or two areas and come back another time.

Farmers’ Market dates with my favorite human 🥕💛
Where To Eat In LA
LA eats are as legendary as its sights. Grab a French dip at Philippe’s, over-the-top dogs at Pinks, or sunset tacos at The Erwin Rooftop in Venice. Wander The Original Farmers Market at The Grove or step back in time at Musso & Frank Grill after you see all the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Chicken + waffles = pure magic ✨🍗🧇. chuttersnap – Unsplash
Teens will love Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles, a place that feels slightly embarrassing to admit you love, but only right up until the food hits the table, so please go! Splurge at The Polo Lounge, Beverly Hills, or Nobu Malibu, both of which offer a taste of the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Experience classic OG vibes at Apple Pan to round it all out. Iconic and photo-worthy, this is how you do an LA family food tour.

Welcome to Venice—where cool never tries too hard 🌴

Stay at The Erwin—the Venice Canals are just around the corner ✨🌊
What To Do In Los Angeles
Visit Beaches
Venice Beach is chaotic, colorful, and utterly unforgettable. It’s famously famous; even vacationing Europeans flock here to soak up its one-of-a-kind energy. Street performers, hippies, hustlers, mural-covered walls, and pop-up vendors all contribute to a carnival-like atmosphere. My daughter’s favorite thing to do is ride bikes from Muscle Beach to the Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park on the beachfront path. You’ve got to feel the salty breeze and listen to the sounds of skateboard wheels and distant waves, and then you’ll be hooked. It’s family-friendly, but don’t forget your camera: this is where California shows off its wild, colorful, and I like totally can’t-quite-believe-it’s-real personality.

Chasing the sunset, guided by the sea. Venice Beach and Santa Monica have all the views!
See Stars In Hollywood
Hollywood is only a short drive away from the beach area. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a must, and it’s always fun to see which stars your kids recognize. And who can resist the occasional backdrop of the Hollywood Sign peeking through the hills in the distance; iconic! The area can feel touristy, but with a plan, you can navigate it in a few hours, focusing on the highlights that interest your family.

Proof you’re not just in LA 📍 You’re in Hollywood Baby! De Andre Bush – Unsplash
Admire The Spaces
Los Angeles is also full of architectural gems that are as fascinating as they are photogenic. The Bradbury Building, with its intricate ironwork and sun-drenched atrium, feels like stepping into an old movie set. For fans of modern architecture, Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by Frank Gehry, is breathtaking. Its sweeping steel curves and reflective surfaces make for excellent photos and quiet moments of awe. If you have the chance to see a concert while you’re in town, do it! Speaking of movie sets, did you know you can tour the Warner Bros. Studios and hang out on the stage where they filmed Friends?
Take a family-friendly architectural tour of the Golden Era of Downtown Los Angeles!

Visit Downtown
We love hopping on the historic Angels Flight, a charming short funicular ride since 1901, and taking a stroll through the Civic Center and Central Library, which showcase grand, cinematic architecture. My daughter and I can often spend hours exploring The Last Bookstore, a whimsical space with hidden nooks, book tunnels, and imaginative art installations. Anyone who is an even remotely reluctant reader will find something magical about this place.

The Last Bookstore gives you a window into another world 📖🌍
Get Spoiled In Beverly Hills
For a bit of glamour, driving or walking down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is fun, even if only for window shopping or people watching.
Get Artsy
A bit further west, the Getty Center has stunning gardens, world-class art, and sweeping views of West LA, the ocean, and downtown. Take the tram up to the top if you’re a family who appreciates beauty, architecture, and a little quiet time away from the hustle of the city.

Bold, bright, and impossible to ignore 🌈✨

Tiny humans, giant art ✨😂 #TheBroad
Speaking of LA’s museums, they offer something for everyone. The Broad Museum features contemporary art that sparks conversation, while LACMA has everything from classic paintings to the urban light installation outside. Car enthusiasts can’t miss the Peterson Automotive Museum, where cars become stories of culture and innovation, and for those interested in natural history, the La Brea Tar Pits are a hands-on way to explore prehistoric life. And once or twice, we’ve found ourselves driving across the new Sixth Street Viaduct, a tied-arch “Ribbon of Light,” honoring the original 1932 bridge with ten sculptural arch pairs It’s one of the most iconic and monumental bridges spanning the Los Angeles River. At sunset, the silver arches catch the light and the city turns a molten gold. Those are the moments you live for. When in LA, pause to experience the little things as much as the destination as a whole.
Want to go but not feel overwhelmed? Take a museum tour of the four most family-friendly options!

Where To Stay In Los Angeles
Tailor your stay in LA to your focus. Downtown LA hotels like the JW Marriott LA Live or the Ritz-Carlton put you near museums, historic streets, and Hollywood! For beach vibes, The Regent in Santa Monica is stunning and offers walkable access to the Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica Place shopping, and stunning sunsets. The Maybourne will put you right in the heart of Beverly Hills with spacious family-friendly amenities; it’s a special splurge, but worth it.
LA will leave you feeling inspired and energized, ready for the next leg of the trip up the coast.
Day 5–6: Santa Barbara, Great Food, Outdoor Family Adventures.
A 2-3 hour relaxing drive is how you’ll ideally ease into the Central Coast. The drive from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara is the kind of stretch that makes those road-trip playlists earn their keep. I think this is where I wore out my Steely Dan CD! Be sure to pull over when the light hits the water just right and grab a few photos. If you decide to take the US-101, a quick detour to the Camarillo Premium Outlets, with 160 designer stores, adds a fun, low-effort break to the journey. Whichever route you choose, you’ll still see glimpses of the ocean sparkles, the pace will leave you feeling mellow, and by the time you arrive, everyone will already feel lighter.

Retail therapy, California style 🛍️☀️. alexander-fae – unsplash
For families, Santa Barbara delivers that rare balance of California beauty, outdoor adventure, and cultural charm. This is one of our favorite places because it’s so easy to love, easy to linger in, and well worth a few days of unhurried exploration. It’s not just home to Oprah, Prince Harry, and Katy Perry; Santa Barbara is a place where flip-flops are acceptable everywhere, and the lifestyle feels effortlessly aspirational yet completely livable.
Where To Eat In Santa Barbara
Food is a huge part of what makes Santa Barbara feel special, and you don’t have to overplan to eat well here. For a meal that really reflects the city’s roots, La Paloma Café celebrates California’s Spanish and Mexican influences with wood-fired cooking in a lively, romance-inspiring space. Seafood lovers should head toward the water: Harbor Restaurant and Moby Dick’s Oyster Bar both pair ultra-fresh oysters and coastal dishes with panoramic harbor views, turning even a casual lunch into a full Santa Barbara moment.

From the sea to your plate, with a view 🦪💖
For something classic, French, and consistently excellent, Bouchon remains a longtime favorite for locally sourced plates served at an easy, unhurried pace, and it’s très French chic! Flor de Maíz is restaurateur Carlos Luna’s upscale Oaxacan-inspired restaurant, where inventive Mexican cuisine, fresh tortillas made in an open kitchen, decadent cocktails, and a lively bar meet prime patio seating with views of East Beach, Stearns Wharf, and the Santa Barbara coastline. I mean, come for the guac alone, and you’ll be happy!

Come for the guac, stay for everything else 🥑💛
If you’re like us, your fam will love the Santa Barbara Public Market in the Arts District, because this is where everyone can choose their own dinner. Again, it’s a food hall, they are popping up everywhere, replacing “food courts” and they’re more social, more diverse, and just more fun in general! Think street tacos and artisan sandwiches to small-batch ice cream. We tend to love Santa Barbara’s Arts District for its creative energy and eclectic mix of art shops, theatre, and cafés.

Who says wine tasting is only for grown-ups? 🧩✨ #BubblesAndPuzzles
For the win, whoever said wine tasting is only for grown-ups has clearly never been to Loubud Wines for “bubbles and puzzles”. While the parents sample local house-concocted varietals, the kids can piece together the coolest hand-made puzzles (a passion project of the owner), either with their dog Taco by your side or in the sunny courtyard.
On weekends, the Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market ties it all together: colorful produce, baked goods, flowers, and a hands-on way for kids to connect with the place they’re visiting, and of course, a chance to learn about local food without realizing they’re learning at all.
For the best weekend brunch, or even casual breakfast, don’t miss the Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach! They serve the most decadent breakfast dishes and the most elaborate Bloody Marys! Set right on the coast, families can enjoy the calm beach before or after their meal and even bring their pup to play in the waves!

Taco-approved family tasting day 🐶✨ #BubblesAndPuzzles
What To Do In Santa Barbara
Take The Trolley Tour
As soon as you arrive, hop on the Santa Barbara Trolley Tour, a 90-minute ride that hits highlights like Old Mission Santa Barbara, the County Courthouse, Butterfly Beach, and the famous Moreton Bay Fig Tree. It’s fun for kids and helps everyone get a feel for the city before exploring on foot. My daughter loves doing this in new cities so her engineering mind can understand the game plan.

Giant guitars, 3-D printers, rooftop views, and strawberry DNA 🧬🎸🌆 #MOXI
Mix It Up At MOXI Museum
For hands-on fun, check out MOXI, the Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation. It’s mostly for little kids, but younger teens will still enjoy playing with interactive exhibits like a giant strummable guitar, the Foley studio, and a makerspace with 3-D printers. My daughter harvested the DNA from a strawberry here; I mean, how cool is that!! Don’t miss the rooftop Towbes Family Lookout Tower, with five different ways to see the city.

Sun, sea, and sky-high smiles 🌅🪂 we’re parasailing over paradise!
Set Sail In The Sky
As far as outdoor adventures go, if you do one thing, make it parasailing over the harbor with Santa Barbara Parasail. This was so much fun and such an amazing bonding moment with my daughter as we soared over the water, hand in hand, taking in the coastline views of Santa Barbara. We also really enjoyed renting bikes (or rent a surrey if you have younger kids) from Wheel Fun Rentals. It’s an easy way to explore East Beach, the Funk Zone, or the waterfront at your own pace.
Get Funky At The Funk Zone
By the end of the day, you’ve got to make your way to the Funk Zone, a lively area full of street art, wine bars, breweries, and live music. Between the Arts District and the Funk Zone, you’ll see why Santa Barbara is always on our short list.

Peace, quiet, and salty serenity ✨🧂
Salty Discoveries
If you’re looking for something slower-paced where you can chill out, the Salt Cave offers a relaxing 45-minute session in a Himalayan salt cave environment. Museums like the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History offer plenty of hands-on learning and kid-friendly exhibits.
With beaches, museums, outdoor adventures, and unique local spots, Santa Barbara is a perfect mix of fun and relaxation for families.
DON’T MISS! 9 Fantastic Adventures With Kids In Santa Barbara
Where To Stay In Santa Barbara
So many cool hotels in SB, but to make sure you’re close to everything, we have to recommend a stay at the Harbor View Inn, right on the waterfront. Here you can wake up to the sight of boats gliding across the harbor, which is always one of my favorite travel moments. Grab a coffee and a sketchbook, then explore Santa Barbara by sea or land. Take a coastal cruise or rent a kayak or paddleboard at the harbor, or check out Spanish-style architecture on the historic Red Tile Walking Tour. For more adventure, choose some of the nearby scenic hikes with stunning views of the Santa Ynez Mountains. For families, a centrally located hotel that feels peaceful sets the tone for the stay.

The Harbor View Inn is right on the waterfront, right where you want to be 🌴🌊
Side Trip To Solvang For Storybook Streets
As you head north from Santa Barbara, there’s one stop you can be sure will win over everyone in the car. Solvang is a Danish daydream, and walking through it feels a little surreal in the best way possible; you may even believe you’re in Europe. The streets are packed with toy stores that pull kids in instantly. There are candy shops, fudge counters, Scandinavian souvenir boutiques full of random things you never knew you needed. We bought the most awesome cuckoo clock from one of our Solvang visits.
DON’T MISS! A Perfect Romantic Getaway In Solvang, CA

Fairytale streets and flaky pastries 🇩🇰🥐 Mario Perez – Unsplash
Then there are the bakeries, and literally every ten steps, you’ll see another window filled with temptation. Warm æbleskiver dusted in powdered sugar, flaky kringle, custard-filled spandauer… resisting is pointless, so don’t even try. There’s a festive, almost fairytale energy happening here, like one of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories decided to pop out of a book, and poof! suddenly you’ve got a village.
Younger kids will dart through the streets from shop to shop, fueled by sugar and curiosity, and your teens will actually put their phones down (briefly, but it counts). Solvang is playful and enchanting, the kind of unexpected stop that turns a road trip into a memory everyone will continue to talk about years later.
Day 6–7: Paso Robles, Cambria, Morro Bay
SLO CAL (San Luis Obispo County) lies at the center of California’s Central Coast, where vineyard-rich hills roll to mountain roads and turn into dramatic shoreline, and here, life naturally slows down. This stretch of the state is shaped by laid-back beach towns with ocean views on one side and wide open landscapes that feel expansive and grounding on the other. We have always found this to be an easy place to visit with family because there is so much to do here. It balances outdoor adventures, great food, and unhurried family time with unique-ly SLO CAL experiences.

Sun-soaked vines and Central Coast calm. This is SLO-CAL wine country doing what it does best!
Where To Eat In California’s Central Coast
The Hidden Kitchen in Cayucos is a cozy, counter-service favorite known for its savory and sweet blue corn waffles and tacos. There’s always a line, and no reservations, but this is part of the charm. Stand in the line, order, and then experience the friendly energy and locally sourced comfort food. It’s the perfect fuel-up before a full day of exploring.

Worth every minute in line 😋✨ The Hidden Kitchen
Robin’s in Cambria has been voted ‘Best North Coast Restaurant’ for ten years! It’s a relaxed, welcoming stop that is part of a little old adobe house and offers a mix of hearty classics and lighter, health-conscious options from local farmers’ markets. Be sure to make a reservation!
Afterward, walk around Cambria and check out all the mom and pop boutiques and small galleries. We love the peaceful, coastal calm mixed with artsy and whimsical ambiance.
So many choices await for dining in Paso Robles; let’s just say if we lived there, we’d go out to dinner every night. In a little alley is Jeffry’s Wine Country BBQ, and this one is a crowd-pleaser with wood-fired smoked Santa Maria–style barbecue and big flavors from Award Winning Chef Jeff Wiesinger. The way the restaurant is hidden off the main street area and tucked inside gives it an intimate vibe, but with a laid-back, inviting feel that both kids and adults will love. Grab some sheep’s milk ice cream for dessert at Negranti Creamery in Paso Robles; we promise it’s delicious.

Unexpected flavors, unforgettable taste 💛🍦 Negranti Creamery
New to Paso Robles, serving farm-to-table dishes in a charming 108-year-old farmhouse, Grace & Rose blends creativity with local wines and produce. Born from a collaboration between Hotel Cheval and the Paso Robles Wine Merchant, it’s a warm, family-and community-inspired spot that captures the heart of wine country.
A little off the beaten path in an industrial part of town, Tin City delivers as a maker’s hub with artisan shops, tasting rooms, and eateries like Etto Pasta Bar offering everything from handmade pasta to gourmet chocolate and olive oils to pastries and small bites. Hands down, one of the best Italian places we’ve ever been. For breakfast, dessert, or a low-key evening treat, the Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse is an easy option right in town.

Family-owned, bayside perfection since 1942 💛🦪 Dorn’s Breakers Café
Dorn’s Breakers Café, a family-owned Morro Bay staple since 1942, sits right on the Embarcadero with sweeping bayside views. Famous for fresh, local seafood (especially oysters) and a relaxed, family-friendly vibe, watching the sun set here at night makes every meal feel memorable. Outdoor seating, great cocktails, and a classic California coastal atmosphere make it a must-visit stop.
What To Do In California’s Central Coast
Get Your Goat
Just north of Cayucos, visit a farm that is truly tucked away in the hills and so remote that losing cell service would have made finding it an adventure. However, thanks to some slightly sketchy GPS directions, we finally made our way through the forest to Stepladder Creamery in Cambria, a highlight of our trip. After you meet all the goats, the kids (specifically the human ones) learn how cheese is made, and sample some of the fresh goat-cheese products, making it both educational and delightfully whimsical. Their cheese club delivers, literally every month, if you become a fan. It’s a window into the region’s agricultural roots, and once you taste the cheese, you’ll be remembering this day for life.

Cheese, goats, and giggles—perfect combo 🐐🧀💛 Stepladder Creamery
Choose Your Own Adventure
Families can easily adapt plans depending on mood or weather. Margarita Adventures Escape Rooms offer indoor fun, while Ancient Peaks Winery in Santa Margarita provides a scenic wine-tasting stop with room to relax. Or go to A-Town Chop Shop for axe throwing in Atascadero or a family-friendly movie at Park Cinemas in Paso Robles.

Zipping into family adventure mode 🚀💛 Margarita Adventures.
Zip Down A Mountain
The Zipline Tour at Margarita Adventures in nearby Santa Margarita is a total thrill for families with adventurous kids and teens. You’ll soar high above oak trees and vineyards on a series of long ziplines. Take in the sweeping views along the way. It’s exciting without being intimidating, and it’s extremely safe and well-run. We’ve been doing ziplines for years, and this place double-checks, triple-checks, and receives a thumbs up from our fam. You’ll find it’s just the right mix of the best kind of adrenaline and beautiful vineyard scenery. And most of all, it’s one of those experiences everyone talks about long after the trip is over.

For the kids, teens… and brave parents too! 😎💛 Single and Double zips available for smaller kids.
Get Sens-ational
Sensorio in Paso Robles began as a one-season experiment and has since become a beloved, ever-expanding evening experience. The deserted vineyard, now an outdoor art space, features multiple immersive installations, including Field of Light at Sensorio by Bruce Munro, where tens of thousands of glowing stems ripple across the hills, and Dimensions, a walk-through maze of shifting light and geometry.

Get lost in the brilliance; it’s a maze of magic and geometry.
Light Towers and Fireflies transform the landscape, and it’s completely magical. We’ve been twice, and it felt new each time as the exhibits have evolved and expanded. We recommend arriving before sunset to grab a drink (beer and wine available) or grab dinner from the food trucks before watching the hills fade from golden hour into full glow. Once it’s dark, you’ll get to explore, so wear good walking shoes, bring a jacket, and plan to linger.

Thousands of lights, one serene night 💡🌌 Sensorio
Taste The Wine
Speaking of vineyards, Eberly Winery has actual vines and grapes, and they make all their wines onsite. Go underground with a guided tour of their hand-carved wine caves, which are cool, mysterious, and surprisingly fun for kids to explore. It’s used for galas, dinner parties, and yes, even marriage proposals. Wouldn’t you say “yes”? Above ground, adults can sip all of their award-winning wines while kids enjoy fresh grape juice and snacks. It’s a playful mix of adventure and indulgence that makes the winery visit memorable for the whole family.

Visit Elephant Seals
In San Simeon, the coastline and the castle steal the show. We watched the elephant seals lounge on the beach nearby for over an hour; it’s endlessly fascinating for all ages and requires zero effort. We were so fascinated that we almost missed our tour time for Heast Castle.

These elephant seals like to strike a pose… or maybe just snooze 🐘💤

Buses take groups with tour guides up the skinny edges of a very steep mountain to the most incredible castle overlooking the Pacific, and there are multiple ways to see the castle and grounds. Book one of Hearst Castle’s tours (the Grand Rooms Tour is our favorite) to dive into the estate’s over-the-top opulence, quirky details, and the story behind one of America’s richest newspaper dynasties. Visiting Hearst Castle is one of the most memorable ways to introduce kids to California’s (pop) cultural history. As a kid, I remembered every detail of this experience and, finally, after a long closure, the castle is back open to the public. Don’t miss!

See The Rock In A Gondola
A short drive away, Morro Bay is the perfect way to slow things down. If you think there is just a huge rock in the middle of the water here, you are correct! But, we recently took the most incredible sunset gondola ride with Central Coast Gondola, with our very own singing and ukulele-strumming gondolier who rowed us through the harbor. It was calm, cinematic, and quietly magical, as the sky shifted through pinks and oranges over the water. Yes, it’s wildly romantic, but it’s also perfect for families, with space on the gondola for friends, kids, and anyone who loves chasing a good sunset.

A sunset cruise that hits all the right notes 🌅🎶 #MorroBayMagic

Just a 30-minute drive up the coast brings you to Pismo Beach, a classic California beach town with long sandy shores, the iconic pier, and outdoor adventures for the whole family. We stay at the Vespera Resort, a modern oceanfront hotel where the sound of waves greets you each morning.
Kids love exploring tide pools, chasing sand crabs, and running along the beach, while adults soak in coastal views and a laid-back vibe. Don’t miss the town’s famous clam chowder at Splash Café. It’s creamy, garlicky, and quintessentially Pismo. Bonus Day 2: Big Sur Natural Mysteries
Continuing north on Highway 1, every turn feels like a postcard. Big Sur is pure magic, with dramatic cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, tucked-away redwood groves in sheltered canyons that add a lush, unforgettable backdrop to the epic coastline. No Big Sur visit is complete without the classics: McWay Falls, cascading from a cliff directly into the ocean, is mesmerizing for both kids and adults; Pfeiffer Beach, known for its purple-tinged sand and dramatic rock formations, is a favorite for family photos; and Bixby Bridge, an engineering marvel since 1932, is the perfect golden-hour stop. Point Lobos, including beautiful China Cove, offers short, safe hikes with rugged coastline and panoramic ocean views.
Nepenthe is our go-to lunch spot, serving simple, fresh California fare on a terrace that feels straight out of a travel magazine.

If you’re in Pismo, you already know 🥣✨ #SplashCafe
Big Sur is where you need to take time to breathe in the sea air and feel the enormity of the Pacific. California road trips are as much about the journey as the destinations, and this stretch of coast is one magnificent experience (albeit a little bit tense at times due to being on the edge of a cliff). It’s a highlight for families seeking awe-inspiring scenery and shared moments.

Bonus Days 9–10: Carmel and Monterey Magical & Full of Marine Wonders
Leaving Big Sur, the drive to Carmel-by-the-Sea is just over an hour and Monterey sits just 15–20 miles from Carmel. The scenic drive is rewarding, whether you hug the dramatic coastline along California Highway 1 or wind through the rolling hills of Highway 68.

Sweet treats in one of Monterey’s sweetest spots 🌞
Where To Eat In Carmel and Monterey
Both Carmel and Monterey are full of spots that foodies, young and old, will love! Here’s a mix of casual and more refined dining that are all family-friendly,
Carmel: Anton & Michel is a must-visit, with cozy fireplaces, fountains, and a romantic vibe that pairs beautifully with their indulgent desserts. Corkscrew Cafe in Carmel Valley is a local favorite, offering plenty of room for kids to roam. Maligne in nearby Seaside is approachable fine dining, delivering unpretentious, elevated dishes perfect for families who love the classics.

Chocolate happiness, coastal edition 🍫🌊 Go to Ghirardelli’s!!!
Monterey: Alta Bakery & Cafe is a gem for elevated breakfast, lunch, pizza, and bakery treats; the outdoor back area is perfect for kids to explore while parents enjoy a relaxed meal, and the line is worth the wait. Little Swiss Cafe, a cozy cash-only spot, serves some of the best waffles in town. For lunch, 7D, Pangaea, and Treehouse Cafe are fun spots in Monterey. Stokes Adobe offers dreamy happy hour patios with fireplaces, and Tarpy’s on Highway 68 serves excellent food in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.
We can’t get enough of Cannery Row, which is ideal for lunch, casual shopping, or a quick ice cream stop. We love imagining the history of the sardine factories that once dominated the area, but we also enjoy the modern shops there now.
What To Do In Carmel and Monterey
Carmel is full of art galleries, whimsical architecture, and hidden courtyards. Even a casual walk along the main street can turn into a treasure hunt, where kids will find murals, local sculptures, and hidden gardens. The town encourages curiosity and slow exploration, perfect for lingering and relaxing.

Where curiosity meets the deep blue 💙🐠
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a highlight for visitors of all ages. Its hands-on exhibits, mesmerizing jellyfish displays, and playful sea otters captivate children while also educating them about marine ecosystems. We’ve always stopped by the aquarium for an afternoon and spent a good two to three hours there, marveling at the sheer variety of life in the Pacific. It’s a massive aquarium!

Sunset strolls and salty air 🌅💛 #CarmelBeach
For a scenic finale, drive the 17-Mile Drive, a loop along the Monterey Peninsula starting in Carmel and winding past rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, and world-famous golf courses in Pebble Beach. Iconic sights like the Lone Cypress provide classic California photo ops, making it a memorable way to close this portion of the trip.
Where To Stay In Carmel and Monterey Bay
For a family-friendly home base in Carmel, Quail Lodge is hard to beat. Nestled in the Carmel Valley, it’s a full-featured resort with golf, tennis, a putting course, pool, spa, and good-sized rooms for a family of four. And it’s dog-friendly too. Cozy and welcoming, it also offers an on-site restaurant, making it the perfect retreat after a day of exploring the Central Coast. Relax and restore at Carmel by the Sea Spa, where luxe cabanas and holistic treatments provide an oasis of serenity and wellness.
In Monterey, we like the Monterey Bay Inn.

Bonus Day 11: San Francisco, an Iconic City
San Francisco has that “big city magic” for the family. It’s energetic and endlessly interesting, with fog-kissed bridges, historic streets, and waterfront views. It’s an ideal finale because it layers excitement without exhaustion. After beaches, small towns, and long coastal stretches, the city delivers walkable neighborhoods, compact sightseeing, and tons of “wow” moments that don’t require hours in the car. Families can choose their own pace: one big activity a day (Alcatraz, the Aquarium of the Bay, Golden Gate Park) mixed with simple pleasures like cable cars and ice cream stops.

Once escape-proof, always iconic 🏝️ Shelby Cohron – Unsplash
Logistically, San Francisco is also a win. If you’re flying home, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is easy to access, well-connected, and makes returning rental cars straightforward, no backtracking required. If you’re continuing north, the transition is seamless: you can head toward Marin, Muir Woods, Point Reyes, Napa, Sonoma, or even the redwoods, extending the adventure without a hard reset.
Where To Eat In San Francisco
San Francisco has plenty of family-friendly food stops. Fisherman’s Wharf is ideal for a casual lunch or snack. Clam chowder in sourdough bowls is a city classic, and my family loves watching the sea lions at Pier 39. Go to Ghirardelli Square for a chocolaty sweet treat. Buy ice cream or decadent chocolate bars as souvenirs. Exploring neighborhoods like North Beach or Chinatown offers countless eateries for adventurous tastes, from Italian to dim sum to local favorites.

Wide-open spaces, gardens to explore, and the Golden Gate in sight 🌉💚
What To Do In San Francisco
Packed full of landmarks and activities for all ages, A great place to start when in San Francisco is Alcatraz Island, where the ferry ride and audio tour make history engaging. Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to feel the Pacific breeze and snap unforgettable Instagram-worthy photos. Golden Gate Park offers playgrounds, gardens, and wide-open spaces for family downtime. Don’t miss a ride on the classic trolley cars (always a highlight for us on a trip to San Fran), and be sure to explore eclectic neighborhoods such as the Mission District or Chinatown, each offering street art, culture, and surprises around every corner. For something special on your last night in town, catch sunset views of the Golden Gate Bridge to reflect on your journey along the California coast.
Where To Stay In San Francisco
San Francisco has a range of accommodations for families, from downtown hotels to boutique stays near the waterfront. Be sure to choose a safe, centrally located hotel to make exploring easy. Think about what your itinerary will be first, whether walking to Fisherman’s Wharf, biking along the Embarcadero, or taking a short drive to Golden Gate Park. A well-situated base maximizes your time in the city and keeps everyone comfortable after full days of sightseeing. We like Hotel Nikko San Francisco, and if your budget allows, you can’t go wrong with the Ritz-Carlton!
