The PCH

The Pacific Coast Highway, also known as Highway 1, is a crown jewel of the California coast. This winding, sometimes narrow road hugs the steep cliffs of the Big Sur Coast, offering jaw-dropping views of the Pacific Ocean – it’s also an opportunity for car sickness to set in, so be prepared for “Mom, my tummy feels bad.” My family is a big fan of ginger chews on these occasions. As you drive, you’ll experience outbursts of “wow” moments that will make your family wonder if they’ve accidentally been transported to a postcard.

Pro Tip: Tune in to road conditions, as there are occasional closures (and even overnight closures of the highway)  due to landslides or other weather-related issues. Always check your Google Maps before heading out.

Pfeiffer Beach

Pfeiffer Beach is known for its unique purple sand and otherworldly rock formations. Right out of the gate, your family vacation has hit a whole new level of awesome at Pfeiffer Beach. While the beach is a bit tricky to find, it’s absolutely worth it once you arrive. Kids can build sandcastles, explore tide pools, or simply enjoy the stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, AKA take selfies. Be sure to snap a few pictures of the famous Keyhole Arch rock formation, which stands like a giant sentinel in the water. Time your visit to watch the setting sun attempt to align itself with the arch. The purple sand of Pfeiffer is a real natural wonder that may leave your kiddos thinking this IS the whole vacation. And, that’s a vacation win!

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is home to the jaw-dropping McWay Falls. This waterfall cascades directly onto the beach below, and it’s one of the most photographed places on the California coast, so have your cameras ready. It’s an easy hike to the McWay Falls overlook, which means the whole family, including the younger kids, can do it whether they object or not. Because what’s a family hike if someone isn’t literally dragging their feet with every step?! You can also explore the park’s other trails, such as the Ewoldsen Trail, for a more enchanting experience. Take in the sights and smells of over 300 redwoods that are over 2,500 years old.

For a longer hike, take the portion of the McWay Falls Trail that leads to the Big Sur River Gorge. This scenic hike will get your family into nature and give them tons of photo opportunities along the way. With the cliffs towering above and the deep green forest surrounding each step, you’ll quickly understand why this park is one of Big Sur’s most beloved spots.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

The Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park also offers some great wildlife sightings, including sea otters – obvi! Sea lions, and even the occasional elephant seal. Now listen, all these little critters used to look all the same to me, BUT, once I finally saw them all together, each otter, lion, and seal is totally different. It is a real learning experience, even for the parents! And of course, the park is part of the beautiful Los Padres National Forest. How could it not be since Los Padres encompasses almost two million acres – that’s one big poppa! So, any way you slice it, outdoor adventures abound here!

Bixby Creek Bridge

You’ve probably seen Bixby Creek Bridge in countless photographs; it’s one of the most iconic landmarks along the Pacific Coast Highway. This 280-foot-high, arched bridge is a must-see and a perfect spot to snap family photos. The bridge offers stunning views of the rugged coastline, so be sure to pull over at the parking lot to take it all in. It’s a quick stop in theory, although if your family is like mine, you could be there for quite some time because somebody lost their lucky pine cone — but a great one nonetheless.

For nature lovers —and hopefully you all are, since you’re on a trip to Big Sur—Garrapata State Park offers some of the most scenic hikes along the Big Sur Coast. With spectacular ocean views and a variety of trails, including a short, AKA family-friendly hike that leads you through stunning wildflower meadows, this park is a great way to explore the natural beauty of the area. And if you’re lucky, you may even spot a sea otter playing in the kelp beds along the coastline. They really are the cutest sea babies.

Limekiln State Park

If you’re looking for a quieter, less crowded spot to explore, Limekiln State Park is a hidden gem. It’s one of the smaller parks in the Big Sur area, but it’s huge on scenic hikes, including the Limekiln Falls Trail. This easy hike leads to the Limekiln Falls, where your family can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and maybe even spot some wildlife. Like the name suggests, Limekiln Park is also home to 4 historic lime kilns that were operational in the 1800s. Cool right? lt’s the perfect place for a peaceful break from the more tourist-heavy spots along the coast.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

If you’re up for a scenic hike, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is one of the most beautiful places on the California coast. Known for its amazing coastal views, unique wildlife, and tide pools, Point Lobos is a must-visit for nature lovers. Keep your eyes peeled for sea lions sunning themselves on the rocks or sea otters floating by. It’s also a great place for a short walk or a longer hike along the cliffs.

Point Sur Lighthouse

For a bit of history and stunning ocean views, head to Point Sur Lighthouse. This historic lighthouse is located on a rocky promontory. Docent-led tours of the lighthouse are available daily and answer every question you’ve ever had about this historic lighthouse and then some. For example, yes, this unique stone lighthouse still guides ships with its light, though there’s no “lightkeeper”; it is now totally automated. And it’s a great spot for a family photo op.

More Day Trips

If you’re looking for a fun day trip, consider visiting Hearst Castle, located a bit south of Big Sur near San Simeon. The opulent estate of William Randolph Hearst offers fascinating tours of his private zoo, his secret wine cellar built during Prohibition, and his own airport which he used to fly back and forth to San Simeon. The grounds are impressive and clearly the reason why Hearst called his property “La Cuesta Encantada,” which translates to “The Enchanted Hill”.  On your way back, stop by Pebble Beach for a quick look at one of California’s most famous golf courses and stunning coastal views.

A Vacation for the Books

From the rugged cliffs of the Pacific Coast Highway to the serene beauty of Pfeiffer Beach and beyond, Big Sur is a perfect family vacation destination. It’s one of the best beach towns in California! With a variety of scenic hikes, stunning ocean views, and unique wildlife, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Where To Stay In Big Sur

Big Sur River Inn

After working up an appetite from your hikes, head to the Big Sur River Inn for some well-deserved food and rest. This little lodge is big on personality. It dates back to the 1930s and has a rustic charm and cozy atmosphere. It’s the perfect basecamp because it’s located near all the must-sees like Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Point Sur Park, and our favorite, the Sea Otter Refuge. It’s a great base to explore the park’s various trails, which range from easy walks to more challenging treks.

Big Sur Lodge

After a day of hiking, sightseeing, and exploring, there’s no better place to relax than at the Big Sur Lodge. Nestled within Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, this lodge is an ideal spot to unwind with the family. You can enjoy a cozy meal, take a dip in the hot tubs after long days of hiking, or just relax by the Big Sur River. It’s a local favorite for good reason!

Getting to Big Sur from Los Angeles

Get ready for the ultimate road trip. The drive to Big Sur typically takes about 4-5 hours, although let’s get real, it definitely depends on LA traffic. That being said, don’t leave for Big Sur any later than 11 am. Otherwise, your 4-hour drive will turn into an 8-hour drive. Those visiting from San Francisco can find themselves in Big Sur after a two-and-a-half-hour drive.
