My best mom buddies and I recently headed to the Temecula Valley wine region for a little getaway. We combined our love for good wine with some much-needed friend and wellness time. Picture a group of us—no kids or husbands around—sipping our way through this beautiful valley all weekend, discovering the best Temecula wineries. Our long, carefree, no-responsibility days were spent taking in the stunning views and catching up over great food, great wine, and lots of laughs.

With 40+ wineries, Temecula has an abundance of award-winning wines that over 3.3 million visitors toast and boast about every year. It’s no wonder the region has become a go-to for wine-tasting weekend getaways.

A Little About Temecula

Just two hours from L.A. and an hour from Palm Springs, Orange County or San Diego, Temecula is an easy escape with a side of luxury. Those mountain and valley views? Absolutely stunning—and totally Instagram-worthy!

Fun Fact: Temecula comes from the Luiseño word “Temecunga,” meaning “place of the sun.” The Spanish translation is “Where the sun breaks through the mist,” which is not only poetic but also explains why this spot is so great for wine. (Sunshine + Mist = Wine Magic!)

With its Mediterranean climate, Temecula Valley is a winemaker’s dream. Sandwiched between two gorgeous California mountain ranges, Temecula’s natural ‘bowl shape’ traps the warm daytime heat while letting in the cool night air, creating ideal conditions for producing high-quality wines bursting with flavor and complexity.

Pro tip: ‘Sip and spit’ is a great way to taste a variety of wines without getting too tipsy. But honestly… where’s the fun in that?

After a full day of tastings (think 20 to 40 pours on average!), the nuances of the flavors really shine through. This is when everyone in our friend group had that “Aha!” moment—a deep, newfound appreciation for and understanding of wine. The community of winemakers here is close-knit and passionate about their products, and wine tasting in these cozy locales feels like visiting a friend’s (very scenic) backyard.

How Best To Experience Temecula Valley

Sure, you could do a day trip to this gorgeous valley and get a little taste of it—but let’s be honest, you’ll need more than a quick sip to fully soak it in. For the whole Temecula experience, plan a long weekend where you can leisurely hop from one winery to another, glass in hand, taking in all the good stuff—and by “good stuff,” we mean the wine, of course!

If you’re new to wine tasting, no worries! The friendly, super-knowledgeable staff and hands-on guidance at each winery have you covered, guiding you through the process without a hint of judgment (even if you call it “the red one” and “the white one”). You’ll leave feeling like a pro, or at least like you drank like one.

Sure, Napa and Sonoma have their history, but Temecula has its own laid-back charm. Here, you’ll experience family-owned spots pouring small-batch, artisanal wines with a down-to-earth vibe. It’s the “younger cousin” of California wine country, equally passionate about quality but with a fresh, easy-going personality. Temecula is all about authenticity and we think that makes it the perfect place to uncork, unwind and maybe even find your new favorite wine.

Getting Around Temecula Valley

Curious how to (responsibly) navigate this incredible wine-tasting adventure? Hop on a sip lift! Getting around Temecula’s wine region becomes a piece of wine-infused cake with Grapeline Wine Tours or better yet, a fun or romantic private sidecar tour! These trusted wine tour operators are perfect for those who want to explore multiple wineries. We loved relaxing and letting someone else handle the driving (for a change!). You can sip, savor, and soak in wine country’s laid-back luxury and beautiful scenery—there’s no better way to spend your weekend!

Drum Roll Please: Best Temecula Wineries

Here are some of our favorite ways to experience Temecula, and yes, they involve wine and incredible food pairings.

Altisima Winery

Discover a taste of Spain (and then some) at the sleek Altisima Winery, where you can soak up those Temecula Valley views while sipping your way through a menu that practically transports you to the Costa del Sol. Grab a seat al fresco at Gaspar’s Restaurant and dig into a tasty Spanish-inspired spread that pairs perfectly with bold varietals like Tempranillo and Garnacha.

Feeling adventurous? Try the 2020 Fortaleza, a dreamy blend of Tempranillo, Petite Sirah and Malbec, which perfectly complements their menu with its violet, black currant, red peppercorn, cooked caramel and boysenberry notes. It’ll make you feel all kinds of sophisticated. Or, if you’re in a rosé mood, the 2023 White Merlot (yes, it’s a thing!) is a fruity, off-dry option with flavors of apples, cherries and strawberries that pairs well with anything on the sweeter side.

If you’d like a side of fiesta with your wine, Altisima hosts weekly and monthly events—there’s always something fun happening here—just the excuse you need to come back for “one more glass.”

Bottaia Winery

Bottaia Winery is one of the most unique wine experiences in Temecula Valley, and it really doesn’t hurt to be a member of this swanky, stylish establishment. There are several private members-only areas where you can enjoy the wine tastings. The pool with wine country views is super chic and straight from the pages of a design magazine. Tasting wines out of the barrel is next level, and so is the on-site wine blending lab, where you can craft your own custom blend. It was one of our favorite experiences!

The 2023 Vermentino is a complex, medium-bodied white wine that’s all about layers—think juicy peach, a hint of peony, white tea leaves, a pop of lime zest, and a dash of orange peel. It’s sunshine in a glass and pairs beautifully with light seafood dishes, creamy pastas, and Mediterranean salads. AKA anything that feels like a mini vacation on a plate.

If you are looking for something a little bolder, the 2020 Sagrantino brings some robust tannins to the table. This one’s made for hearty, flavor-packed meals like roasted lamb or grilled sausages. Take a sip, and you’ll catch notes of Italian herbs, fresh cracked black pepper, black walnut, and blueberry preserves, all wrapped up with a cozy, cinnamon finish. It pairs well with richly seasoned dishes, aged cheeses, and those irresistible cured meats—so bring on the charcuterie board!

Carter Estate Winery

At the Carter Estate Winery’s sparkling wine facility, We got an inside look at the classic champagne-making process—truly a behind-the-scenes peek at how that bubbly magic happens—from grape to glass. After seeing it all in action and tasting a few magnums of champagne (I wish!), you’ll definitely want to try the 2016 Carter Estate Winery Blanc de Blanc, which snagged Best of Show Sparkling Wine, Best Blanc de Blanc, and a Double Gold. It’s as award-winning as it gets!

For something a little different, the 2022 Les Nobles, crafted by Master winemaker Jon McPherson, combines three grape varieties: Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. It’s dry and vibrant, with rose petals, lychee, and ripe pineapple aromatics. Layered with spiced apple and citrus, it has a lingering finish. They recommend pairing this with Pacific Cod with a Mornay sauce or even a Thanksgiving turkey.

Pro Tip: If you really want to make the most of any winery, joining the wine club is the way to go. Memberships often include award-winning and exclusive releases, along with discounts, first access to new vintages, and invites to special events. It’s a fun, personalized experience and lets you stay connected with the winery year-round. How fun would it be to have bottles delivered right to your doorstep? It’s a great way to experience Temecula year-round and a great gift for fellow wine lovers (or yourself—I won’t judge).

Churon Winery

We love it when two worlds collide! The Churon Winery celebrates both French heritage and California’s vibrant wine culture. We had an elegant and intimate wine-tasting experience not to be missed. Their award-winning wines have received national and international accolades, and it’s an ideal destination for a romantic getaway or a leisurely weekend escape.

Their 2022 Tempranillo is a bold, dry red wine bursting with juicy raspberry and strawberry flavors. It pairs well with everyone’s favorite charcuterie board and paella, burgers and pasta.

Cougar Vineyard and Winery

Located on the De Portola Wine Trail, Cougar Vineyard and Winery is a family-owned boutique winery with rare Italian varietals. Both the wine and the views will make even a Tuesday afternoon feel like you’re living la dolce vita in Italy—minus the jet lag and passport stamps.

The 2019 Estate Negroamaro is a spicy, rich wine made from 100% estate-grown Negroamaro, a thick-skinned grape native to the Puglia region. With flavors of red fruit, blackberry and coffee, it ends with a velvety oak finish. The medium-high tannins make this the perfect pairing with BBQ chicken pizza, pulled pork teriyaki, and, of course, you guessed it, Italian food!

Danza Del Sol Winery

If you’ve never ridden through vineyards on an ATV, let me tell you, visiting the Danza del Sol Winery is a not-to-miss experience. We highly recommend kicking things off with a taste of their Espumosa Sparkling Wine, featuring hints of pear, sandalwood, green apple, and honeydew melon. Then, glass in hand, hop on an ATV and cruise through the vineyards! As you ride, you’ll check out the grapes on the vine, sip the fabulous wines they produce, and make several stops along the way for even more tastings, because why not?.

The 2022 Viognier, 100% estate-grown, offers vibrant fruit flavors with notes of cantaloupe, ginger spice, and chamomile. The 2021 Estate Syrah, made from 100% estate-grown Syrah grapes, offers flavors of charred raspberry, stewed blueberry and a hint of anise. As you sip, the wine’s intricate layers start to deepen, creating a tasting experience perfect for the changing seasons. The rich, smoky notes complement slow-roasted meats or a BBQ cookout.

Pro tip: Try a “Bella Lina” charcuterie box paired with different wines for a delicious, informal tasting right in the vineyard—a perfect way to savor and explore each pour!

Doffo Winery

When motorcycles and wine collide, think MotoDoffo! Trust me; you definitely want to check out Doffo Winery and its MotoDoffo collection. They are family-owned and known for their exceptional wines and the unique collection of vintage motorcycles at the winery, which adds a twist to the tasting experience.

Funny enough, the winery—and the motorcycles—kind of happened by accident. Argentine-born Marcelo Doffo started the winery after strangers would literally stop by the farm curious for a glass of wine or a closer look at the vintage rides. From this spontaneous enthusiasm, MotoDoffo was born. Visitors can’t seem to get enough of either.

One standout vintage at Doffo Winery is the 2023 Viognier, an aromatic and fruit-forward white wine with lush, ripe tropical aromas and flavors. It pairs beautifully with a range of dishes—think poultry, spicy Asian, or seafood—that complement its intense fruitiness, floral notes, and slight sweetness. Doffo Winery has a distinctively bold, carefree spirit and is a memorable tasting adventure.

Leoness Cellars

At Leoness Cellars, we’re all about the stunning vineyard and mountain views, exceptional, award-winning dining, and warm hospitality. By the way, the duck liver mousse with cornichons on brioche toast pairs perfectly with their 2022 Melange D’ete! Steak lovers will rejoice when they try the best-ever grilled mishima reserve hanger steak with a peppercorn demi creme sauce—trust us, it’s worth the calories! It tastes even better with the award-winning 2021 VS Syrah: Alessandro Vineyard, Foundation Block and the 2021 SS The Farmer, a complex red blend.

Now, if you’re looking for something to enjoy on a quiet evening in the jacuzzi with Depeche Mode playing in the background, winemaker Tim Kramer suggests the 2019 Mélenge De Rêves. It blends Cinsaut, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Grenache with silk tannins and a velvety finish. He raves that it “tastes so damn good,” and we’re not going to argue with that. He thinks it pairs well with a variety of dishes, but we have to insist that it pairs perfectly with a night of relaxation. Honestly, that jacuzzi idea sounds like a plan right about now!

Masia De La Vinya

If you’re looking for a laid-back wine-tasting experience in a picturesque setting, Masia de la Vinya is a boutique winery with unique tasting experiences. The wines are fruit-forward and complement a variety of dishes. They say there is a wine here for every palate, and we can vouch for that.

One of our favorites is the 2021 Barbera, which has lively acidity and a medium body. Aromas of blueberry, pomegranate, and cloves lead to a smooth, lingering finish. Pair with earthy, savory dishes like mushroom risotto or butternut squash pasta.

For a more refreshing and versatile wine, the 2022 Rosé de Garnacha has a crisp acidity and bright flavors of wild strawberries and white peach. It’s produced with 100% stainless steel aging and 40 days of cold fermentation and pairs perfectly with grilled meats and roasted vegetables. It’s a crowd-pleaser!

Miramonte Winery

Miramonte Winery is one of our favorites! Not only do they have award-winning wines, but their garden-focused menus are incredibly fresh and innovative, and the valley views are breathtaking. What sets it apart, though, is the friendly guidance of the winemakers in the tasting room. They don’t just hand you a glass and leave you to figure it out; they make the experience much more personal.

You must try the 2022 Opulente Blanc, a standout in their collection, with notes of fresh peach, apricot, pineapple, guava, honeysuckle, orange blossom and butterscotch; it’s the bee’s knees! Their Rosé is elegant and whimsical with hints of spring flowers, fresh strawberries, citrus, tangerine and watermelon candy. And don’t even get us started on the wildly popular Bin 380, with tones of fresh strawberries, cherries, white pepper, violets, and candied raspberries.

All of these wines shine individually, but when paired with any of their fresh farm-to-table dishes, they bring the vibrant flavors of the seasonal ingredients and local produce to life. It’s the perfect combo!

Palumbo Winery

Palumbo Family Vineyards and Winery focuses on small-batch production and is known for its exceptional Sangiovese. We promise you’ll agree this varietal’s vibrant fruit flavors and acidity shine. Those looking for a more personalized experience will love the intimacy of this vineyard. We think the 2016 Sophia’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a gem of a wine, as does Wine Enthusiast, giving it an 87 score. With crushed purple flowers, blackberry jelly, coffee, and elderflower aromas, it pairs well with grilled steak or chocolate desserts.

Peltzer Winery

The Peltzer Winery and Peltzer Family Cellars is one of those places that combines the best of both worlds: a family-friendly winery with a charming rustic farm atmosphere and boutique wine tasting. Peltzer transforms with the seasons: in the fall, it features a Pumpkin Farm, and in the winter, it offers an ice rink, hot cocoa, and food trucks. It’s like stepping into a holiday movie!

If you’re visiting in the warmer months, check out one of their incredible dining experiences, Dinner Among The Vines, where you’ll be surrounded by the plants that produce the wine you’re drinking. It’s a fantastic way to dine, especially with a fabulous four-course meal. I’d highly recommend Devilicious Eatery—they know how to cater to the moment.

The Peltzer Family Cellars Albariño is the perfect complement to their flavorful farm-to-table recipes, and it’s guaranteed to be a memorable sensory experience. If you’re into red, their 2020 Cabernet Franc presents enticing aromas of black pepper, fresh bell pepper, and tobacco, followed by rich flavors of dried cherry, plum, and leather. This might sound more like the ingredients for a backyard BBQ than something you’d want to drink—but trust me, fire up that grill and bring it to the BBQ for one of the best gatherings you’ll ever host. Peltzer Winery is ideal for wine, family fun, and seasonal activities.

We sort of can’t get over the intriguing Angry Wife collection. It’s hard to imagine you’d still be angry after staying at the Ponte Vineyard Inn and drinking the bold and crisp vintage couplet. The Angry Wife Red 2021 is a medium-bodied wine with a soft start that builds into firm tannins and ends with a lingering finish. It brings notes of pomegranate, salted caramel, and a hint of vanilla oak, making it rich and slightly savory. Pair with mouthwatering dishes like grilled meats and hearty pastas.

Meanwhile, the Angry Wife White 2023 has a lighter, more mineral-driven profile with a bright acidity. It balances flavors of juicy grapefruit and lemon, finishing with a refreshing minerality., This would complement lighter fare such as seafood and salads.

Robert Renzoni Vineyards

Robert Renzoni Vineyards is renowned for its small-batch, artisan wines. The winery’s inviting vibe features rustic charm and Italian flavors. Enjoy comfort food like mama used to make at Mama Rosa’s Trattoria. They also have live music every Friday and Saturday—and sometimes on Sunday.

The 2021 Petite Sirah is a standout wine with bold flavors and captivating aromas of potpourri and leather. It also has intense blackberry, lavender, and sweet tobacco spice notes. This tannin-forward wine pairs beautifully with hearty dishes like roasted lamb or pot roast. We recommend savoring dark chocolate by a cozy fire to enhance the wine’s lingering depth.

South Coast Winery

Besides being one of our top picks for relaxing hotels, the South Coast Winery has a great tasting room. A lively indoor area and a more family-friendly outdoor tasting area with live music are great options and unique experiences. Their 2023 Pinot Blanc is 100% Pinot Blanc, offering pineapple, spiced apple, and toasted brioche aromas. The stainless steel fermentation process with a touch of new French oak and lees aging gives this wine a rich, creamy texture. Delicate toasty notes and a pleasant dryness balance it—it’s the wine equivalent of a warm hug. Pair with a whole roasted herb chicken, root vegetables or creamy soups for a cozy, comforting meal that’ll make you want to curl up with a warm blanket.

Wiens Cellars

Wiens Cellars offers a picturesque vineyard experience focusing on quality wine production. We can’t get enough of their wines, including bold reds like the 2019 Kriel Cabernet Sauvignon, which has notes of black plum, nutmeg, and baked vanilla bean. For something refreshing, try their 2023 Vermentino, which has notes of orange blossom and almond biscotti. The scenic surroundings make it a perfect spot for tastings and events.

Let me tell you, the 2021 Pinot Noir is a must-try! Aged 14 months in French Oak with 20% new oak, it’s a silky wine with subtle spice notes and a smooth finish. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 92 points, and Editor’s Choice and the balanced acidity and subtle spice make it a versatile companion for any decadent feast (or even a cozy night in)!!

Wilson Creek Winery

We absolutely love family-owned Wilson Creek Winery, known for its iconic Almond Champagne, a must-have sparkling wine for all occasions. This gold-medal-winning sparkling wine is also known as the OH MY GOSH® sparkling wine. Don’t you love this! A diverse red varietal that showcases rich flavors and elegant finishes is their 2021 Cabernet Franc, with rich, earthy, and bold flavors. Cabernet Franc is one of the parent grapes crossed with Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. We think it pairs well with herb-crusted prime rib, duck breast with a cherry gastrique, or a tender roast leg of lamb. The relaxed tasting experience amidst the beautiful vineyards makes it one of the most special places in Temecula.

Temecula Valley Winemakers

One of the things we find most interesting about Temecula Valley is that you’ll often spot local winemakers enjoying a tasting together. They share meals, celebrate successes, and even juggle parenting duties side by side. When one winery earns recognition, it feels like a win for the entire community. This close-knit connection to the grapes, the land, and each other makes Temecula wines a special part of California viticulture. The camaraderie among winemakers adds a unique touch that enhances the experience of each bottle.
