Families go wild when visiting San Diego, and when they throw in animal encounters, it gets even better. But here’s the catch: there are two big-name wildlife attractions in San Diego, and they’re both run by the legendary, non-profit San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.
So should families go for the iconic San Diego Zoo or head north to the wild, wide-open San Diego Zoo Safari Park? Spoiler alert: there’s no wrong answer. Each one serves up its own brand of wild, and depending on your family’s style, one might be a better fit (or maybe you’ll want to do both!).

Imagine waking up in San Diego, munching on a breakfast burrito, and then BOOM! Suddenly, you’re staring at a polar bear swimming laps like he’s training for the Olympics. That’s the San Diego Zoo, baby! Located in the heart of Balboa Park, it’s a lush green oasis that feels like you’ve walked into a jungle maze, sparking curiosity and wonder. We loved the thoughtful landscaping, complete with winding, stroller-friendly paths, weaving through animal habitats, and inviting families to explore.

Walking around the zoo, we not only saw all the wild animals we could hope for, but there were towering trees and colorful plants everywhere. You could also hear the sound of soothing water features. It’s an immersive, peaceful atmosphere that’s not only beautiful, but it sets the stage for a wild, wonder-filled adventure that’s easy to enjoy for explorers of all ages and abilities.

Where To Eat At The SD Zoo
Along the way, we loved the different cafes and food carts strategically placed, which meant we could refuel without missing a beat. We had to try Albert’s Restaurant, which served up chill vibes with the most zen outdoor patio. The soothing waterfalls and breezy California casual fare are the perfect lunch retreat. Why dine indoors when you can soak up the sunshine and tropical vibes on the outdoor deck? For my daughter and I, it was the perfect spot to relax and refuel between animal adventures. Named after Albert, the beloved 400-pound gorilla, the restaurant serves crowd favorites like Quesa Birria Tacos with braised short rib and consommé, a double-stacked chicken sandwich with a cornflake crust and harissa hot oil. I went crazy for the smoky albacore tuna melt. And of course, all can be perfectly paired with craft cocktails and local brews.

SD Zoo Safari Park
Of course, we wanted to go to both amazing places, so just a quick drive, 35 miles north of downtown San Diego, is the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, but suddenly it’s as if you’re on a different continent. Rolling hills, open plains, and herds of giraffes, rhinos, and various kinds of antelope wander as if they own the place (spoiler: they do).
So many family-friendly activities that are fun and educational.
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has ‘zoo’ in the name, but it’s really a living, breathing safari adventure that might have your kids (and you) wondering if they’re still in California. And you’re probably not the first visitor to secretly Google how to become a safari guide (we did), and for the record, it’s never too late to start! We absolutely loved the open-air safari truck ride and behind-the-scenes animal encounters, but you can also enjoy relaxing cart tours, walking treks, and even overnight sleepovers. There’s a safari experience perfectly tailored for every adventurer.
Where To Eat At The SD Zoo Safari Park
The Safari Park’s diverse dining scene is a place that will keep you fueled and ready for adventure at every turn. Dining options range from scenic full-service restaurants to grab-and-go kiosks perfect for a quick bite. For a memorable meal with a view, The Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook offers tasty sandwiches and fresh salads alongside panoramic vistas of rhinos and giraffes. For a laid-back, casual stop, The Sheared Sheep near Walkabout Australia tempts with Australian-inspired wraps, salads, and especially cocktails in a unique animal-filled setting. Go to Barking Deer BBQ & Beer for a delicious tri-tip sandwich and nachos! And when you’re on the move, Kibo Cones & Snacks in Nairobi Village serves up soft-serve ice cream, churros, and refreshing ICEEs, ideal for strolling past cheetahs lounging in the sun and condors soaring overhead.

The Real Stars of San Diego are the Animals.
Both of these incredible San Diego attractions offer paw-some animal encounters that range from cute and cuddly to ewwww creepy crawly to OMG wild! At the San Diego Zoo, you get an all-star lineup. Koalas snoozing in eucalyptus trees, orangutans swinging overhead, elephants doing their slow, majestic stomp, and throughout the day, you’ll find them all enjoying that perfect San Diego weather. It’s a great way to spend the weekend. The habitats are immersive, thoughtfully themed, and educational without being boring. The Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is a big win for kids. Offering four zones inspired by real ecosystems (think rainforest mist and marshy crawlers). It’s as fun for toddlers as it is for that hard-to-impress tween, and ours loved every minute.

Inside the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, it’s clear as day in the open savanna; the Safari Park has a secret weapon: space! The animals roam like they’ve got all the time in the world, which they kind of do. You won’t see lions pacing behind glass here. Instead, you’ll board the Africa Tram, or splurge on a Wildlife Safari, where you’ll explore habitats representing Africa and/or Asia, rolling past African rhinos, zebras, big-horned sheep, and okapi, and tons of bird species living their best savannah lives. If you want a next-level experience, be sure to sign up for the Ultimate Safari or the Roar & Snore overnight campout, where you sleep under the stars, of course, with lions roaring in the background. It’ll be hard to top that with bedtime stories at the hotel. This is a no-brainer!

For the Little Ones (and their Tired Grown-Ups)
If you’ve got strollers, snacks in tow, and nap schedules to factor in, the San Diego Zoo is probably your best friend. The whole space is surprisingly walkable for such a big zoo. There’s plenty of shade (very important), lots of bathrooms, and a ton of spots to sit down and bribe your child with a popsicle if they promise to make it to one more exhibit.
Whether you visit the zoo or safari park, it’ll be a fab time!
On the flip side, the Safari Park is more of a commitment. It’s spread out, sun-drenched, and built for explorers. That said, it’s great for kids who have a bit more stamina and buckets of curiosity-inspired energy. Think scavenger hunts along walking trails, up-close views of cheetahs mid-sprint, and a chance to hand-feed lorikeets (sticky but totally worth it). Having a tween of my own, I could see firsthand that the more curious she was, the more she loved the experience.
If you’ve never been on a real safari, this is the next best thing!
Both parks offer stroller and wheelchair rentals, clean facilities, and excellent signage, so you’ll rarely find yourself lost or desperate for a changing table. And yes, both parks have solid gift shops that will somehow make you leave with a plushie (like a meerkat) that you definitely didn’t plan on buying. Yes, even tweens still love the plushies!

The SD Zoo has the Skyfari Aerial Tram, which is basically a relaxing ride with panoramic views and a blessed excuse to stop walking for five minutes. The Safari Park comes through with wild bonuses like the Balloon Safari (go up in a tethered balloon and get a bird’s-eye view of the savannah) and ziplining for the brave-hearted among you. Ready for adventure? Kids 10+ can zipline at 40 mph high over African and Asian animal habitats. Don’t worry, there are herbivores only below! Get ready to feel like a nature-loving superhero because it’s so much fun!

The Price of Goin’ Wild (Totally Worth it)
Admission to both parks is similar. Expect to spend about $66-$76 for adults and $56-$66 for kids, depending on the park and the date. The San Diego Zoo tends to be better for spontaneous half-day visits. You can see a lot in three to four hours if you’re strategic. The Safari Park, however, is more of a “pack snacks and plan your whole day” kind of place. Some activities, like safaris or overnight experiences, require advanced booking and extra fees, but they’re unforgettable and so totally worth it.
Want to visit both? Look into a combo pass because it often makes more sense financially, especially if you’re staying in town for a few days or planning a return trip.

If you don’t have a car or hate traffic, hop on a FlixBus or Greyhound for $20–40; they’re comfortable, frequent, and drop you right in downtown or Old Town San Diego in 2–3.5 hours. For the most relaxing trip, take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner (about $35–50, 2¾ hours) with ocean views and a bar car. Flying sounds fast but usually takes longer door-to-door and costs far more. Drive if you can; otherwise, bus or train wins for ease.
