With warm days lingering longer into the afternoon and the sun shining brighter, everyone knows that Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial kick-off to the summer season. Show your gratitude for our veterans and relish in the freedom and liberties you enjoy with a Memorial Day weekend getaway with your family to one of these wonderful vacation destinations right here in the good ‘ol  U.S  of A.

New York City

Nothing can fill you with more patriotic feel goods than a trip to the Big Apple for the holiday weekend and catching a glimpse of our LadyLiberty. A short ferry ride will take you to Ellis Island, the home of the National Museum of Immigration, from there you can see the Statue of Liberty or take a ferry to Liberty Island to get a close up view of her. Fill your Memorial Day weekend getaway to New York City with Fleet Week! Enjoy ship tours and chats with some of our hard-working military including the US Marines, US Coast Guard and US Navy. Take the family out and about to the Little Neck Douglaston Memorial Day Parade or, stroll through the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and see Naval ships including the USS Submarine Growler, at Pier 86 along the Hudson River.

Arlington National Cemetery

Explore Arlington National Cemetery with a dedicated guide on this private 2.5-hour walking tour. More than a cemetery, it is the history of our country and an enduring tribute to those who have served honorably and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Look upon the funerals with reverence, listen to the sound of taps in the distance, view the time-honored Changing of the Guard ceremony, watch a group lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, discover over thirty monuments and memorials, and thank a service member. An Arlington National Cemetery tour invites you and your family to remember, revere and explore.

Washington DC

Washington DC celebrates Memorial Day like few other cities can. With a mix of exciting events, along with the city’s monuments, memorials and museums, you can expect a weekend rich in history, patriotism and honor. Many of these events and attractions are free to the public. Attend the largest Memorial Day parade in the country at the National Memorial Day Parade or pay tribute to our veterans during a wreath-laying ceremony featuring the Navy Band & Ceremonial Guard.

Arcadia National Park

Acadia National Park is a stunning national treasure on the coast of Maine in the USA and if you are looking for an outdoor adventure then this is a perfect spot to spend Memorial Day weekend with the whole family. While visiting the park, there are many activities to be had. Consider hiking the Bowl Trail at dusk so you can experience the sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, which happens to be the highest point on the U.S. eastern seaboard. Hike down to the seashore and explore marine life in the tide pools. Go horseback riding on the Carriage Roads. The long weekend brings big crowds to Arcadia National Park, so if you’re hoping to be the only one on the trail…you won’t be. Be prepared to meet a new friend, or 5.

San Diego

Memorial Day Weekend in San Diego may be one of the most patriotic weekends I personally have ever had. I recommend a stroll through Balboa Park. With19 gardens, 17 museums including a Veterans Museum and Memorial Center that honors the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces, Coast Guard and Wartime Merchant Marines, 13 recreation venues, nine performing arts arenas, nine various attractions and play spaces, restaurants, dog parks, I never wanted to leave, there was something for everyone to love. Other things to do over the long weekend include, kayaking with the seals at La Jolla or taking a boat ride on the Flagship Ferry, a historic ride that connects downtown San Diego to the Coronado Ferry Landing. You have another opportunity to honor our veterans on Memorial Day with a visit to the USS Midway Museum or the Miramar National Cemetery Veteran’s Memorial Service.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a great Memorial Day weekend getaway. For starters, I have two words for you: Gear Sales! You will find end-of-the-season ski and snowboard sales on North Shore and South Shore as well as everywhere in between. Not to mention. the Heavenly Village Summer Concert Series begins on Memorial Day Weekend. Or, have a Memorial Day BBQ at the beach. Beaches with BBQ grills include Commons Beach, Kings Beach State Recreation Area, Sand Harbor, Camp Richardson Beach, and El Dorado Beach. And, while it isn’t a US Military memorial, the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center and Emigrant Trail Museum is a historic landmark that honors our pioneers and is a worthwhile expedition.

Las Vegas

Celebrate all the liberties you enjoy and live for with a weekend Memorial Day getaway to Las Vegas. Vegas knows how to party so you better believe the Memorial Day celebrations are going to be starting on Friday and carry on through the Monday holiday. The city will be bustling with activities and events! You can count on parades, concerts, shows, and city tours. And as the desert mecca of outdoor pools – there are loads of Memorial Day  pool parties like the EPIC Las Vegas Pool Crawl.

If your family loves the great outdoors, Moab Utah is the perfect place to spend the holiday weekend. Pack up your brood and visit Redrock Country for Memorial Day Weekend because the weather is perfect in late May, and you have the chance to visit two of the most spectacular national parks in the United States. Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park offer visitors hike after hike up to sweeping vistas of red rock formations, like Delicate Arch and Mesa Arch that boggle the mind and take your breath away. The moon and the stars above your Moab area campground put on a stargazing show of their own and is one of the best things about being away from the bright city lights

Barrier Islands of Georgia

Take an island adventure to Georgia. Did you know that there are 14 barrier islands in Georgia?! Four of which are found in the “Golden Isles” – sounds exotic enough. St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Jekyll Island are some of Georgia’s most beautiful vacation destinations without ever leaving the country. That being said, Tybee Island is my favorite island in Georgia because: 1. It’s fairly close to Savannah, which I love. 2. There’s tons of biking trails and paths to fulfill my beach cruising dreams. And 3. It has big sandy beaches (and a cool old lighthouse) that I love…and my kids love too. Yay! High fives all around! It’s also the island my family visits most often. It sits at the northernmost section of the barrier island chain. Jekyll Island is another one of the must-see islands in Georgia. It is home to the Sea Turtle Center and the Tidelands Nature Center. The list for island fun in Georgia goes on and on.

Plan a patriotic weekend full of freedom and fun for the whole family!
